At the moment I didn't care how I would explain why I was out of the castle, or how I had found this child but it didn't matter. There wasn't any time to think things through, this would have to work. I got to the castle gates and screamed. Normally I would come back in through the window, but this was an exception. Half a dozen of guards appeared by my side and threatened me with swords, until I took off my hood revealing my face and making them realize who I was. They let me in, apologizing with puzzled expressions.
I sprinted towards the entrance and quickly called for help, in a matter of seconds I as surrounded by several servants, my parents and Olympia.
She was wearing a silky nightgown and had her hair tied in hair rollers. She looked embarrassed as if no one was supposed to see her like this, but that wouldn't be a problem as all eyes were on me, expectant to hear an explanation as to what was going on.
At that moment I realized that my next words could easily make or break Anne's life, and mine. I had no way to explain what had actually happened, that would ruin everything, so I forced myself to think of the perfect excuse and quickly blurted out "I-I couldn't sleep so I went on an evening walk through the city."
Everyone gasped. My mother looked livid "As I was walking by, I saw this little girl and she looked so sick I had to bring her here."
Olympia was visibly confused and my mom didn't seem to care at all about the dying child in my arms. "Grace, I don't know what you wanted to accomplish from this but you will immediately tell the guards where you found this- this child so that they'll take her back" I couldn't bare the thought of Anne, who I'd seen right after she was born and who I considered my little sister, dying, so I desperately screamed "SHE'LL DIE!" And then I started sobbing "Please mom, I'm begging you! Please!"
"My goodness Grace, what has gotten into you. I have never seen you behave in such disgraceful manners. You're embarrassing yourself" Looking at me, laying on the floor so heartbroken must have made her reconsider, because after a few moments she ordered "Take the baby to the royal doctor, and make sure she is well treated"
I had never felt so relieved. Anne would be alright and that was all that mattered. It didn't even bother me that for the next fifteen minutes mom furiously shouted at me for the irresponsibility of my actions and then had me escorted to my room where I would have to stay until told otherwise.
