I quickly gather all of my belongings into the back of my piece of shit car. Once I shut the trunk with a slothful hand, I slowly let out a deep exhale and turned my back towards my house. I mean, the house I once lived in, I should say.
For me, this is quite a wake up call. Well, now it's actually happening. I'm officially moving. I never thought this day was going to be here so soon.
I'm going to be living on my own in a cold, dark, small apartment. A cheap place, I should say. It was my mom and dad that found it for me in an old, sketchy newspaper ad. Pretty lucky, I guess. I shouldn't be too ungrateful about it. Not too pricey. It's a decent neighbourhood for me to start off in to begin my adulthood. Although, I'm still quite apprehensive.
I've always had a center of companionship and constant presence involving my mom, my dad, Nancy and even my little sister Holly. Also, my three best friends. Except, Nancy moved away with her husband Jonathan in New York. All the way onto the east coast. I miss her dearly, but I'm glad she's happy and living her life to the fullest potential.
Speaking of my friends, Lucas, is the first friend that I've ever had. He's been living across the street from me since we were 3 years old. During which time, I saw him playing with a bright, rainbow ball outside.
When it accidentally rolled into our yard, we immediately just clicked and we instantly became friends. As we were growing up, we had sleepovers in my basement every Saturday watching Star Wars, hanging out at the arcade, and talked about every movie you could ever imagine. It always seemed that we were one in the same.
But as we got older, I noticed that Lucas and I were different when it came to girls. He was more of a ladies man and it was almost impossible to get a girl to like me. His charisma and wit always win girls over. As for me, I couldn't even look at a girl without making an awkward smile at her.
At the end of high school, he met his "dream girl", I wouldn't say she's a dream though, and they became boyfriend and girlfriend within a week. Max and I never got along, but I always support Lucas in anything he does. Max's demeanour was always sarcastic, defensive, closed off, and cold towards me.
Once him and Max got quite serious, he moved out with her a couple years ago. We still talk, but we're definitely not as close as we once were. I don't know if it's because Max and I aren't on good terms, but I miss having my best friend around.
Dustin and Will, my other two good friends, always crashed with Lucas and I. We hung out, ate pizza and started to play continuous games of Dungeons and Dragons. The nostalgia of endless nights of us screaming, crying, us yelling at one another over what role we should do or what choices to make. It's definitely something absolutely memorable and wholesome.
And then there's Will. I met him in Kindergarten at recess when we were playing on the swings. One particular mouth breather named Troy, constantly tormented us whenever he wanted to. However, he usually got more vicious with Will. I never understood why.
One afternoon, I noticed that there were a big group of kids swarmed around Will, and I immediately ran to a noontime supervisor and told them about the bullying. Troy immediately got a week of detention afterwards. After the group was broken up, I went up to Will and asked him to be my friend and he gave me a small smile, lowering his dirty blonde hair that hid underneath his eyes, nodded and said a soft, but quiet yes. I remember how good it felt back then to be there for someone.
Fast forward to the present, Will got accepted into Johns Hopkins Medical School. He sadly had to move out of Oregon and all the way across the country to Baltimore, Maryland. He came to visit me sometimes, whenever he wasn't too busy, and we'd catch up on each other's life. Sometimes it was regarding what we wanted to do for a career or the childhood memories of the four of us going to the arcade. It was memorable. However, I always understood the errands and the time-poor conditions he had to deal with. He was hardworking, and as his friend, I couldn't be more proud of how far he has come.
