It was Saturday. The day when they were supposed to meet for the project. ‘Why couldn’t they have chosen any other day? Or any other place?’ she asked herself.
Ocean was working at a café across town. She has to work and do a stupid school project at the same time on the same day. But no matter how stupid the project was, it was counted as their finals so she couldn’t decline the meeting.
She needs to somehow get through the day without revealing her job. She doesn’t need more people to bother her at work. She was too busy worrying about what to do that she barely noticed it was time for her shift.
Her shift starts at 1 pm and their supposed meeting was at 3 pm. ‘Hopefully, this is enough time’ she thought. 3 pm came around and she saw Avery come through the café’s door. Thankfully, they were looking at their phone and didn’t see Ocean behind the counter. She told her co-worker that she was going to get something from the back of the store as an excuse.
She was hopeful that she could get away with not working until her shift ends. Not very likely. A few minutes later, her co-worker came to fetch her. Accompanied by scolding of course. She explained her situation but was still forced to work. ‘There’s no escaping this, is there?’ she asked herself not expecting an answer.
She went to the counter seeing two people in line. She glanced around, eyeing the table where her classmates are. All of them were on their phones not having ordered anything. She continued taking orders when she looked up at the next customer and her stomach dropped.
“Hi Welcome to Tea Talk Café and I will b-“ ”Ocean?” Luna exclaimed.
Oh no.
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw the others raised their heads at the mention of her name.
Double oh no.
“Why didn’t you tell us that you work here?” Luna caught back her attention. She doesn’t know how to answer that question and she doesn’t want to.
She decided to play it casual and just shrugged it off and groaned. “Because I don’t want to. Now can you please just tell me your order?” Luna said her order and Ocean prepared it. After she finished it, she gave it to Luna and muttered: “My shift finishes in a few minutes, don’t wait up for me”.
She finished her shift and gathered her things from the back of the store and headed to their table. When she got there, Amelia was discussing details about the project, Iris’ head was directed towards Amelia but her eyes were on her phone, Luna was just staring at Amelia but her mind was clearly somewhere else, and Avery didn’t even bother to look at Amelia and continued scrolling on their phone.
She sighed and sat next to Avery. They continued talking about the project. And by “they” it meant that Amelia continued to talk and the others just nodded at her from time to time. They settled on conducting a survey in a few months for the platonic relationships part of the project.
They exchanged numbers so they could stay in contact when outside the school. They all walked out of the café and headed to their own directions. Ocean made a mental note to remind them to never again meet up in that specific café.
