“In the case of good books, the point is not to see how many of them you can get through, but rather how many can get through to you.” – Mortimer J. Adler

The next morning,

Pearce's Pov...

I woke up by the touch of heart shivering, icy breeze on my cheek. Slowly opened my eyes and found myself on the balcony.

I fell asleep here last night and because of the wind, my head was aching like hell. With the support of the railing I tried to stand up but my legs were numb due to sitting in one position for hours.

I got inside and walked straight toward the kitchen to make coffee for myself. Then I realized, "what is the time now?" I immediately started looking for my phone which was on the couch.

"Oh! No!" It's 7:45 am already, and there are only 15 minutes left to get ready for work. The first thing I came up with is to call Mr. Roberto, my manager.

He answered me within 3 rings.

"Hey, Pearce, what's up?" He sounded cheerful.

"Good morning sir, I will be a bit late to report for my shift today" I completed the sentence hesitantly.

In my 3yrs of experience I have never done something like this, calling my manager early in the morning, especially being late. "And I believe that to cope with fast running pace, the only way is to be punctual for everything and every time."

"Heyo chill... Haven't you checked the duty roster update?" He asked.

"No, it was too late by the time when I left the management yesterday so" I replied politely.

"Alright, no worries. He too said politely 😊 Actually it was your week off today. And I knew that you would be the only person to leave late, after closing. So, I gave you the day off today" enjoy the weekend"

On hearing this my heart got lighter, and I was beyond happy that I couldn't reply to anything but "Thank You sir." And then i ended the call. I thanked the lord as well for saving me today.

I went into my bedroom, where you will get to see nothing but a closet and comfybed, and all are in a black and gray combination.

I was about to get in my bed to continue sleeping, then I remembered the conversation last night with my mom. I'm still feeling bad. And it's been a long while since I haven't visited my mother and sisters. How about on this New Year's Day if I visit them? I told myself.

As I reach for my phone, it started ringing. The caller was Cindy!

"Hey good morning Pearce, are you up?"

"Yeah, morning. What's the matter?" I asked her because generally Cindy wouldn't call me on my day off. She knows that how much I hate if someone calls me either on my off day or in regular day unless it is something really important.

"Um..m.. Actually, Mr. Roberto told me to call you up for the shift today"... She said in a low tone.

"What! but I called him just a moment ago and he is the one who let me know that it is my day off today" I sounded disappointed.

"Yeah, but we got the news that our chairman's son is going to visit today. And you are the only one who could handle the VIP guest in the best way. So, you have to be here please... Cindy pleaded.

"I didn't know what to reply to. After all, I'm not the person who would give excuses on work related bases.

So, "Well I will be there within half an hour."

And before she could say anything else, I quickly hung up on the call and walked towards the bathroom.

Surprisingly it's only 10 minutes! I took a shower today, whereas usually I would take 1 hour.

There is no time left to make breakfast for me, so I took out the cup noodles which are in stock for the whole month. I started eating cup noodles with one of my cute chopsticks.

Writer's POV

(Yeah, you have read it right. I mentioned chopsticks. But she's not Chinese. She is basically from India, Sikkim, the smallest state in the world. And now she has almost settled in Seattle, New York. After she's getting a promotion from her company, and because she's the only penny earner in her family, she doesn't want to leave them alone. In India, if anyone gets pregnant before marriage, the entire society will start interfering in every possible way to taunt or make guilty enough to commit suicide. But her mother was strong enough to survive and could make her children raise up in a proper manner. But society didn't spare even the little kids. Pearce and her sisters used to get bullied in her school by calling them illegal kids. And that is one of the reasons why Pearce keeps herself distant from others.)

Thank you so much for reading 😄... Stay tuned for the upcoming chapters... Lotsoflove 😘
