The next morning, Thomas wished his cancer was gone, but Sister Anne told him that it will last for a long time. Then he found Sister Anne chatting with Emily looking very worried.

" How long will Thomas have to stay in hospital.?" murmured Emily from the conversation room... " A month or a few years." replied Sister Anne

"  Three years.!!" worried Thomas
Thomas was told not to worry about it, he just needs to get better.

" What if I can't fight cancer!" Thomas went on.

" don't be scared, cancer means sick and weakness, you'll get better soon, we just need to run some tests." said Dr Marlene.

That afternoon, Percy and Gordon visited Thomas, they were his first visiters.

" I've got this for you Thomas." said Percy giving him a paper bird...

It was a paper crane.

" Thank you Percy, but what is this?" asked Thomas.

" It's a paper crane, if you fold one thousand cranes, your wish will be granted and you'll have good luck for the rest of your life." explained Percy

So Thomas took a piece of origami paper and folded it into a beautiful crane.  Just like Percy's.

The next few hours, Edward, Percy and Thomas started folding paper cranes...

The first few nights at the hospital were quite scary at first, but the worst part was getting shots every morning after breakfast.

Getting shots is part of being in the hospital, Thomas found it very scary at first, but then he got used to it.

" I will keep folding hundreds and hundreds of you, and I will get well again." Murmured Thomas to the beautiful paper crane.

A few weeks later... Thomas was feeling very weak, his wheels were full of pain and everywhere was painful inside Thomas..

One day, Thomas saw Duck next to his bed, " Hello Thomas." said Duck

" Hello Duck." replied Thomas

Duck had steam cancer as well, his father died when the bomb had hit, and his mother got steam cancer and died, So from last year onwards, he was an orphaned engine.

" I just wish I could help out at the orphanage, but now If I die, Mrs Smith will not have an orphanage helper." said Duck looking like he was going to cry.

" Don't worry, I'm sure you will get better and I'm going to fold a crane for you." said Thomas

" Thanks." Duck replied

That was the last word he ever said....

Late that night, Duck had died...

Thomas cried for Duck, he was Diesel's best friend.

Thomas hated tasting disgusting medicine every night after dinner.

" Thomas, you'll have to go in tomorrow morning for surgery." said Sister Anne.

" Surgery!!!" panicked Thomas

" Yes, but thankfully it's your last test you have to go through, then you can return home." replied Sister Anne.

The next morning, Thomas had surgery, and he was hoping his cancer will go away.

That afternoon when his family and Ashima visited him, they brought rice balls, egg rolls, sushi and lots of castella azuki bean cakes.

Thomas's friends had also sent him a Indian elephant plush toy from India and a Japanese doll from Japan.

" Thank you everyone for all of this wonderful food and your kind gifts." said Thomas
