Unknown POV~
Day in and day out, dealing with the same old affairs with his Majesty. I hoped that today would finally be the day I could take what I truly desired - the throne. It was mine, destined for me! But I had to be patient... I still needed to find them, so I couldn't blow my cover - not yet when I was so close.
I was walking down the corridor to my private quarters after finishing my duties for the day. Just as I grabbed the doorknob, my dolt of an accomplice flung the door open and ran out. BAM! He hadn't expected I'd be there to run into. He jumped back a tad.
"Oh, you idiot!" I barked. "Can't you see that I'm trying to enter!"
Regaining himself, he began stammering, "I-...very sorry sir, but..."
"But what? I'm not in the mood for your impotence right now."
"I found something," he said in a whispering tone of voice.
I pushed him into the room, checking no one saw us, then shut the door. "What did you find?" This could be the news I'd been waiting for. I nudged him over to the small table by the wall.
"It's not much, but I was able to narrow down their location."
"Anything's better than nothing. Where?" The candle on the table was nearly blown out by my voice. We both paused and looked at it; it was our reminder that we needed to keep this as quiet as possible. After it fixed itself, my accomplice answered in a muted tone....
"They are in some type of forest, I can say that it is still in the kingdom. But sir, the kingdom consists of large dense woods, it would be nearly impossible to find them."
"True enough. But keep going on, we may be lucky enough to learn more," I said as a knock came to my door. I stilled a second, then motioned for Kallen to be silent. After another moment I answered, "Enter."
A short serving girl slipped in, curtsying and keeping her gaze low. She said, "Sir? His Highness requests your presence in his study."
"Alright," I said, so she curtsied again and moved back outside to wait in the hall. I turned towards Kallen, and lowered my voice again. "We are one step closer to our dreams." I followed the servant back into the corridor, and she walked me to the King's private study. Arriving at the door, she bowed and scurried off to do her other chores. I looked at the grand door. This wasn't the first time I had been summoned here, and while the outside was certainly impressive, it was the secrets and affairs inside the room that I really wanted. Soon I would be the one inside this room, summoning my own servants and advisors.
All of a sudden, another servant exited the room with a tray of tea. The door brushed to a close behind her, but not enough to keep the conversation on the other side hidden from passersby. She gave me one precursory glance and dipped her head as she kept walking. After she was out of sight, I took the opportunity and stopped myself beside the door, listening to the private conference.
"I do not think it would be wise to reveal the truth now. They should wait," a man finished, clearly talking to another inside.
"It is their choice to tell. From what I have heard, she is starting to remember on her own. Besides, they are capable of taking care of themselves in unusual situations. But I worry for my friend. He has been through so much, and if anything happened to his daughter-" A proud, commanding voice replied.
"The princes would never allow that, Your Majesty."
What good fortune! Not only were we closer to finding their location, but a weakness as well? I couldn't have asked for a more perfect resolution to my years of effort. Although there seemed to be another variable: this person's daughter. She was somehow connected to the princes, but she might be hard to use. And what was it he had said? "Starting to remember on her own." What did that mean? In any case, we have a lead - a huge one at that. But I was going to need the perfect moment to use this to my advantage.
"That's right. If I remember correctly, my youngest wouldn't let anything happen to her when they were little," the king paused for a moment in what was probably reminiscence "Now, he probably would not let anyone touch so much as a hair on her head. But the threat is still very much real. Are we any closer to finding the leader?"
"Afraid not, Your Majesty. We are still looking, but I have a feeling that he won't wait anymore. Everything seems to point to him striking sooner rather than later."
"We must be ready for him then. Thank you, Nico. And please make sure this letter gets to them."
"Of course, Your Highness."
I hurried away when the conversation drew to a close. I wouldn't want them to find myself spying and having my position at risk of being discovered. Making it look as if I had just entered the corridor, a nobleman exited and walked the other direction of the corridor, and disappeared from sight. Interesting, very interesting.
I continued to the door, knocking when I approached. A voice spoke to come in. I opened the door seeing the King seated behind his large wooden desk. The fire crackled in the giant fireplace behind him. He took the appearance of a phoenix, as the fire sprawled out like wings. I walked to the front of his desk and bowed before him. Raising up, His Majesty's eyes tore away from some papers he held in his hand and landed on me. He leaned back into his leather chair, and in his strong, steady voice, he said:
"Ah~ Claude, I need you to look into something for me."
