Mumbles

Mumbles. They were quiet, but they still managed to wake you a little.

You cleared your mind and focused on falling back into sleep. Slowly but surely your limbs grew heavier, and you were finally losing your train of thought.

Until it happened again. They were much louder this time, more audible. You shifted in your sleep to face Cedric.

Your eyes fluttered open and landed on the sleeping face of your boyfriend next to you. His brow was furrowed and his fingers twiched here and there.

He'd talk in his sleep occasionally, so this was nothing new. But after that night in the graveyard, they'd turned to nightmares. Cedric wouldn't talk about them. He would just wake up the next morning with a pale and quieter than usual.

But you knew they'd most likely been about the images He-Who-Should-Not-Be-Named  put in his head of you being tortured and killed.

Gently you laced your fingers with his and closed your eyes again, but before you could think about drifting off, the mumbles began again.

In an instant the small sounds grew in volume and he was shouting, his voice straining with despair. Tears fell from his still shut eyes as he continued to plead.

"No - no - please just- NO, Y/N - NO-STOP - please don't kill her- pleas- NO"

You immediately shot into a seated position and tried to wake him up. But it was no use. It seemed as though your contact with him sent him deeper into the nightmare as he began to thrash around.

Trying to restain his arms, you pulled him into your lap in a panic.

You begged him to wake up, yet soon after you resulted to trying to comfort him in hopes he'd calm down enough to wake himself up.

As you whispered sweet nothings into his ear and reassured him you were right here, alive, his movements held less force. He still thrashed and tried to escape your hold, but soon you heard him whimper, "please" over and over and over again.

He'd calmed significantly, but his breathing was still erratic and a string of unclear words strung from his lips. Quietly, he choked out sobs that broke your heart into pieces.

It was obvious he was awake now, but you remained calm, something to keep him grounded.

You placed a kiss to the top of his head and hugged him tighter. His head laid on your chest, his back slumped against your stomach, still disheveled from his movements only moments ago.

After a moment he whispered, "please, just make them stop," before he turned in your grip, burying his head in your chest as he hugged your body tightly to his.

Rubbing his back softly, you placed another kiss to his head. "I'm right here Ced. And I'm not going anywhere," you stated just above a whisper.

He lightly nodded and held your tighter, letting the full weight of his body fall into you as if he loosened his grip you would disappear.

The two of you stayed like that for a while. Cedric tried to calm himself and slow his breathing while you rubbed his back and ran your fingers through his hair, occasionally telling him you were right there, reminding him you weren't leaving or how much you loved him with words or by another tender kiss.

"I must've forgotten to put a silencing charm over myself before bed. I'm sorry I woke you," he whispered in a tired voice. Your heart sank. It took you a second to comprehend the value his words held in this situation.

"Ced, are you having nightmares like this every night?"

He didn't respond and you looked down at him lying in your arms.

"I'm not mad Cedric, I just wish you would've told me. You shouldn't be going through this alone, especially by putting silencing charms over yourself so you wont wake me, not to mention in your own room," you said quietly feeling ashamed of yourself for not realizing earlier.

"I'm sorry." He sounded so defeated, so instinctually you hugged him closer to you.

"You don't need to apologize. I'm just happy you're here, alive, and in my arms."

You lowered yourself back to a horizontal position so you were face to face with him. Looking into his eyes you said, "I just want to be here for you, regardless of how absurd you may think it be. I love you and that means I love you all the time and through everything. Don't you ever forget that Diggory."

He nodded, looking much better than before and replied, "I wont. I love you so much." You placed a kiss to his forehead and offered him a supportive thin-lipped smile, which he retuned with one of gratitude.

Slowly he laid his head back onto your chest and hugged you close, and with you rubbing up and down his back, he freely let himself fall asleep for the first time in too long, no longer scared of being woken up because if he did, you'd be right there ready to help.
