In the movie, he got a letter. And, instead of being a normal person and hiding it in his cupboard, he decided to take it to the kitchen where is horrible relatives would see it. So, they obviously took it away. Then, when the thousands, maybe even millions of letters came, he caught one from the air, instead of picking it up the floor.
Also, side note, how the heck did he get on the quidditch team? And in the position of seeker? Like he struggles to catch a letter, that wan't even falling really fast (and there was thousands of them), yet he manages to catch a golden snitch, which was going super fast and it was the one and only golden snitch. Only one. How?
