The Lot. Hongdae. 2012.
Kim Sehun hated the smell of cigarettes. He side eyes his closest friend, Choi Jihoon, who seems to be enjoying one although he's pretty sure he dislikes it just as much on the inside.
You see, in order to get into The Lot, you needed to look the part. This wasn't some ordinary place to get high and drink a shot of cheap liquor, this was the real deal; where mafia members and notorious street racers came together in a hubbub of cheers, hollers and money.
The two walk past a group of girls clad in black and mesh clothing, glittery make up and eyeliner outlining their eyes, reflecting the lighting. One of them drops their eye in a flirty wink at Sehun and he avoids eye contact with her entirely.
"Jisoo will not be happy if she knew I was here right now," he mutters to Jihoon who rolls his eyes.
"Jisoo won't know because you won't tell her."
"I don't like keeping secrets from my baby," Sehun narrows his eyes at his friend.
Jihoon doesn't have time to reply when a crowd near them starts to hoot. Two pairs of headlights flash in the distance although they seem to be rapidly approaching the the finish line. "I really want you to race here."
Sehun whips his head towards his friend so fast he sees blur for a second. "What?"
"Look," Jihoon throws an arm around his friends shoulder. "I haven't seen anyone drive as amazing as you do. And I'm not even exaggerating, I think you have a talent and people should see it."
Sehun would feel flattered and special if it weren't for the surroundings. "So you bought me here? Where we can possibly get killed?"
"Don't be dramatic."
In that moment, the race reaches a crescendo as a yellow racecar whips across the finish line in the blink of an eyes. The crowd erupts in cheers and hollers and it's not long before the racer of the winning car is stepping outside of the car with a holler of his own, the adrenaline coming off of him in waves as he high-fives the crowd while running along the strip of it.
"I know you want to experience that," Jihoon says with a knowing lilt to his voice. He's not entirely wrong either; the way Sehun is eyeing the sleek and shiny car and the way the racer is basking in his glory is obvious to his best friend.
"It's way too risky," Sehun snaps out of it. "And this is proper street racing. It's messy and dangerous with no rules."
Jihoon rolls his eyes, pushing his way past the crowd and walking with a determined stance as if he knows exactly where he wants to go. "That's what makes it fun."
"I don't even have a car."
"That's not a problem. I know a guy here."
