Chapter 5
The Dark Side of the Moon
"Long ago there were forbidden spells. They were called the Bloody Scrolls. Red magic spells that had large gates sketched out on their cover. Your father used one of those spells. And he created you and your sister from one of those spells."
"Magic created me?"
She nods, "You aren't a natural birth. That sort of magic was banned by the members of the inner circle."
The woman I knew as my mother was in fact my Cousin Kitty. Cousin Kitty gathers herself, several times fixing her bra as she speaks to me. She was still the same woman. All curves and low rolling voice that shed used to seduce men most of her life. She'd taught me so much growing up. It's wild to know I didn't come from her.
"You have no mother. You were twins born of the reddest magic. Twins born to the five families usually carry the same power source. When one twin died, the other twin inherits their power. Usually, this causes one twin to murder the others in the history of our coven. The bad twin is known as the dark side of the Moon."
"If I'm the 'good' twin then this Lilith has to be pretty bad," It hits me.
"Your father believes so. That's why we hid your identity all this time. That is why I couldn't have you know about magic and come to this place."
"He brought me back," I tell her, "He's been communicating with Leon Staten."
"What? Do you even know who this guy is, Gene? Do you think this guy is really talking to Genesis Bah? Really? He could be using you. How could you be so stupid? I thought you were smarter than that..."
"Calm down lady, I sold him out," I tell her, "They probably are working on capturing his ass any time now..."
Or killing him. I sort of felt bad.
"Genesis would want you away from this place."
"You don't' know what he wants," I ask, "You denied me my identity."
The betrayal is deep and compelling. I'd wanted an explanation from her but I wanted one that made sense. Not this. Not someone who would hide so much about who I really was.
"It wasn't safe. It still isn't. Your sister disappeared when she was young. No one knows where she is but if you are getting warned by spirits then you are in danger. I came to warn you to leave here."
I can almost laugh at her at that moment.
Leave? Was she serious?
"This is where I belong. Do you think I fucking need you? I thought you were dead and I was fine."
"Gene—-please?"
We are interrupted. It's someone standing there. We both turn and notice Blanco who quickly says, "Ma'am I think it's about time you leave. The Headmistress doesn't want our families visiting us while we prepare for the competition."
My mother looks at Blanco then looks at me. She wants to say more. I can tell. But as much as I knew my mother I think she knew me too. I struggled to trust people and the fact that she would betray me like this was something that I wasn't sure if I could ever get over.
Right now I needed to find my own path and she lost the right to help guide me the moment she lied about being my mother.

I wake up the next day feeling on edge with everything. I walk out to the shared bathroom and notice that the door is open. My eyes get wide when I see that it's Blanco.
