We make it back to the circle at the same time as the boys, and pass around some chocolate. I'm the only one that's noticed anything so far. We're just discussing going back out, when I shush everyone. "None of you hear that?" I hiss.
"No, sorry Luce," Lockwood says. he takes my hand, and I blush, but I do feel slightly less insane. Our eyes meet, and in his I can see the reflection of the stars. I care so much for you, why can't you see it? "What does it sound like?" George asks, seemingly oblivious to Lockwood and I's moment. I shift my gaze to him, scowling. I try my best to explain the stepping and dragging sounds, tell them my peg leg theory.
"Makes sense, if the guy was a pirate" Holly says.
"But there weren't any pirates in the area!" George bursts out.
"Then w-," I stop mid word. The sound has changed. It's quieter now, but closer, much closer. "It sounds like someone's digging,"
That's when the hand rises from the sand beneath our feet.
