Chapter 4: Mystery of the Crossword Code

Summer holidays has just began. Anne and George were in the room at Kirrin Cottage. George was busy painting stuffs while Anne was solving crossword puzzle.

"Do you know this one George? ",said Anne. George replied,"What is the clue."

1 across :- The number of the man who doesn't play the match (6 letters)

They thought for a while before answering in union "Twelve". George said,"See I am so great". Anne rolled her eyes and said,"Then answer this one."

18 down :- When the sun comes right up (4 letters)

George replied" Noon. Thats quite easy, Twelve Noon, Twelve Noon, Twelve Noon."

Anne was surprised to hear "Twelve Noon". She got up and looked for old newspapers. Meanwhile the boys and Timmy were coming from the bicycle ride. As always Julian reached first.
Then the boys and Timmy came to room were Anne and George were sitting.

Anne collected two papers. She opened the crossword in both papers and looked at the 1 across and 18 down. They all actually connected together. She spoke out to everyone about this connection.

She said," This makes sense guys,the places are even same. See this is yesterday's and this day after yesterday's paper and this is today's paper, they all have same boxes and same image."

Dick said," I think you need rest you are making up things it's just a puzzle."

Anne said," Guys, don't you think it's wierd. See it says 'Follow this ' on day after yesterday's paper and yesterday's paper says ' Delivery van ' and today's paper says ' twelve noon ' on the same place. And when we connect it, it does makes sense."

Julian said," Maybe, but I don't think it take us to any conclusions. Leave that today I am trying to do some magic tricks do you guys want to see it."

George said," Yeah sure."

They all enjoyed the magic show put up by Julian. They all had their lunch and sleep. They are now going outside to do some fun with their bicycles.

Julian asked," Shall we race?"

They all agreed and as usual Julian went far away from them. Anne didn't like ridding so much so she stopped. Dick and George also stopped with her.

Suddenly Timmy started barking . They all looked backwards. A car was heading towards them with full speed and a traffic police man was behind him trying to stop him.

A wooden rod was placed on the side of the road . Anne ,George and Dick uplifted the rod and placed it in the middle of the road.

The car driver saw it and stopped immediately. The traffic police man got down his bike and started asking the two car drivers the reason of overspeeding .

The police man thanked us for stopping the speeders. The man who was sitting next to driver had a wonderful strength, he had tattoo's all over his arms. He was quite tall and muscular man.

Police man took the details of him and wrote it on his book. Then they all left.

After a while Julian came back to see what happened to others. They all returned home and saw Uncle Quinton waiting at the door for them.

It is now becoming dark outside so Dick and Julian left for their house. While Anne was staying with George at Kirrin Cottage.

The next day

Anne got up early and went to take the newspaper first. To her surprise the crossword had same blocks and same spaces. She went up to George and told her about it.

Anne said," I am always right. "

George rolled her eyes and said her to solve the code.

Anne solved it and got the answer as Millwood and crossing.

George said," So the clues are ' follow this delivery van twelve noon Millwood crossing '."

Anne and George got ready and they informed Julian to be at Dick's place. They had their breakfast and set off to Dick's farmhouse.Anne explained the clues to the boys. They still didn't believe her.

George said," Let's find out then."

Dick replied," You are saying that we should go there and waste our time."

George said," Anne is our friend we must listen to her instinct. She would feel bad if we didn't follow her."

Julian replied," Dick let's go. Maybe this could lead us to a new case. And by the way Timmy is there with us so no problem."

Dick said," Okay, let's go."

They were at Dick's house playing and waiting till the time turns out to be 11:00.
They went by car to the Millwood crossing. It took almost half an hour to reach.

The road was densely covered by bushes.
Five hide behind one of those bushes. They waited for about fifteen minutes. It was about 11:45 am.

Julian used the time by showing a magic trick of removing a coin behind George ears. Dick asked," How did you do that?" Julian replied," Magicians never tell."
Dick said," oh wow, you are doing magic while illusions are coming to Anne. "

They waited till half an hour but no one turned out. They were about to leave but Timmy barked  and a man came out a bush and started walking towards the other side of the road. He didn't heard Timmy's voice.

He behaved as if he was analysing the road and making some assumptions.
He was middle sized man, with mask on his face. His descriptive feature was the red ring that he wore.

Moreover he was quite in a hurry and left from there with his bike. The number plate wasn't visible to the famous five.

They all came out from their hideout when they were sure that no one was around. They decided to visit the newspaper editor who was Uncle of Julian.

Julian's uncle was sitting on his desk and wandering through his files. When they went in they were warmly welcomed by him. Julian narrated the whole story and asked him to meet the manager of crossword section. They all went in the room were all crossword were hung up on the walls. A man of middle sized, with brown hairs welcomed them in.

Julian's uncle said," They are here to find out about the crosswords. "

Anne said,"All papers are having same boxes and have some logical meaning."

The man said," It's just a coincidence. There is nothing that serious. It's just for fun. I make crosswords so that people can enjoy and have jolly mood."

The man's phone beeped and he answered the phone. After his talk he hung his phone and said to them that he has to go out somewhere so he must pardon.

Julian glanced at his hand when he stood up and was about to leave. Julian suprisingly said to others about the red ring that he wore. All came to the conclusion that he is not trustworthy and  he must be up to something.
