The rest of the night was seemingly uneventful. They all chatted, drank and ate some more, before the group slowly started to disperse.
"It's great to see you guys." Cassie smiled, awkwardly hugging her parents as they started to leave.
"You need to come ours next time, more...space." Sarah sighed gazing around the house with judgment, she always hated the fact Cassie lived here, hated how small it felt.
"Bye." Cass reluctantly smiled showing them out the door.
"You feeling good?" She turned back to Leo who was putting on his jacket getting ready to leave.
"Yeah, I'm sorry I just got so nervous and I hadn't eaten all day." He apologised pulling her into a tight hug.
"Don't worry! It's fine, they liked you." She attempted to ease his nerves though hers were still peaking.
"I'll call you tomorrow." He kissed her on the cheek before wandering out of the door.
"Are you alright my love? You seem off." She moved over to the kitchen, Matthew leaning against the countertop in silence, he smiled turning his head to hers, just looking at her for a second before speaking.
"Just please, please be careful." He spoke softly not wanting to seem like he was pushing her, he was just trying to help
"I can take care of myself Matthew!" She sang as she attempted to clean up the kitchen.
"I know, but you can't take care of him." He pushed himself off the surface heading over to the sink where she stood, passing her a cup.
"You have a heart of gold you know? You just keep it locked away." She took the cup with a smile, her other hand briefly resting on the side of his arm, she knew he was just looking out for her but she didn't need a babysitter.
"I've got to protect myself, it's the only way I can survive." He spoke somewhat defensively like he was upset at her words.
"No one can live like that Matthew, have to open yourself up. Yes, you can get hurt, but you also experience the most amazing parts of life." She turned to him, placing the cups in the sink, she knew what he meant, sometimes it was easier to be cold and closed off than risk the pain of being let down.
"You're wise." He joked walking out the kitchen taking his dark jacket off the coat hook.
"My A-Level in philosophy is really coming out today." She followed him opening the door, leaning on the frame.
"Night Cassie." He smirked gazing down at her.
"Night Matthew." Cass pushed herself off the frame to be closer to him, taking him into a hug, before wishing him good night.
Cassie closed the door with a sigh resting her back against it, finally taking her first break of the night.
But she was sad that it was over, that she had to wait to see him again
