There he was, Matthew, her stalker. They had been childhood friends for years until her mother sent her to live with her dad in Florida. Imagine moving across the country, from California to Florida. The hardest part had been leaving behind her friends and especially leaving behind Matt. She had become friends with his younger sister when they were just young girls and then soon after she was friends with Matt. Their mothers had been the closest of friends, being neighbors and all. She moved just before her freshman year and has been in Florida for two and a half years. Exactly one year after she moved here Matthew showed up. He suddenly started going to the same school as her and even though they weren’t neighbors, always seemed to be around. If she went out with friends, he was there, if she went to the amusement park, he was there, if she went to the beach, he was there. Now, halfway through her junior year, he was worse. He had even started talking to her now.
She was pulled from her thoughts when her best friend Jasmine flicked my arm, “Hey, Isabel, I’m talking to you.”
“Owe,” She rubbed her arm, “What?” She asked, only slightly irritated.
She rolled her eyes and said, “Remember we were giving personal opinions about each and every boy in study hall. We got to Matthew when you suddenly dozed off into your own world.”
“Oh yeah, okay so Matthew. Umm,” She paused not knowing exactly what to say, “You go first.” Isabel smiled.
“Well, he’s hot, for sure hot, probably more of a jock if anything, maybe a druggy but probably not. Extremely charming, beautiful tan like he came from California. Smart." She was staring at him as he turned around and looked right at her, then, moments later he stood from his chair, "He wants to be a doctor. Has amazing brown eyes and soft brown hair.” Isabel listened to Jasmine and knew everything she was saying was exactly true about him. She was pretty good at this game, “Actually I’m surprised he hasn’t asked you out yet. I mean almost every single guy in school has a crush on you Isa.” Matthew walked by there seat and dropped the note on Isa's desk. She froze and looked up to see him looking back and smiling at her.
She picked up the note and it read:
Bella,
It’s been a while, maybe we should hang. You know so we can catch up. I haven’t actually talked to you since California two years ago.
Matt.
She rolled her eyes but noticed Jasmine with wide eyes beside her, “Spill it, all of it.” She looked at Isa intently.
“Well, for starters, we’ve known each other since like kids. And by that I mean we had like ‘play dates’ together.” Her eyes got huge. She explained everything else about her mother and then Matthew moving out here and living with her dad. Her jaw was gaping open when she was finished.
“So, tell me about him then. Tell me if I was right about him.”
She smiled, “Well, he’s a jock; I mean he would definitely fit in that category and he has amazing brown eyes and the softest brown hair. He’s extremely smart and wants to be doctor. He’s charming and his tan is California tan. Not a druggy but in middle school he was for a small time. I mean imagine waking up next to him; his smile-.” She stopped herself, realizing she was telling Jasmine too much. More than she would even admit to herself.
“Wait, you slept together?” Her eyes were bright with interest.
“Well, not actually slept together like you might think but yes, we have slept in the same bed. When we used to- never mind.” She stopped talking and the final bell rang for the day.
Standing, she grabbed her back pack, leaving the classroom and heading to her locker. She opened it up and started putting books in it. She felt a hand on her lower back.
“Bell. Come out with me to the beach party tonight?” The voice sounded pleasantly familiar. She turned to see Matt.
“Why should I? What if I can’t even go?” She looked angrily at him even though her heart raced. She loved him, she always had.
"I’m not that stupid. I already got your father’s permission to take you. Now all you have to do is say yes.” He smiled his wide, adorable, white smile that she had seen almost every girl in school melt under. It didn’t faze her.
“Fine. If it gets you to leave me alone I will go with you.” She shut her locker, “What time are picking me up?”
“A little after seven. Please, wear something nice.”
"When do I ever not wear something nice?” Isa rolled her eyes and walked away out to her car in the parking lot.
Later that night she jumped into the shower and when she was done she walked into her room and threw open the closet door. Scanning through the spring dresses she owned. She decided to wear her black swim suit on under a loose t-shirt that had a cute panda on it and a pair of denim short shorts. In the middle of getting ready her phone rang and she picked it up while trying to put on her shorts, “Hello?”
“Isa? Where are you right now?” It was Jasmine.
“Why?”
“There’s a beach party tonight and I’m going to come pick you up right now for it.”
“Oh no, don’t worry about it. Matthew is giving me a ride. He already invited me. So I guess I’ll meet you there?”
“Umm...yeah. Meet you there.” She hung up and she quickly ran into her bathroom trying to put on some eyeliner after noticing the time read 6:55. She quickly ran a brush over her teeth and threw her hair up into a pony tail. Her long blonde hair down was just a tad past her bottom. Her mother had always wanted her to cut it so it was easier to take care of but she just never could. Hearing the doorbell ring she quickly put on her sandals. Grabbing her phone she put it in her back pocket, then grabbed her wallet and keys. She ran to the front door, stepped outside and almost ran right into Matthew, “Sorry.” Her face felt red for a quick moment and then she noticed how unusually cool the air around her felt. She looked over at the driveway and saw Matt’s black jeep, the top open and the sides and back off, “Let’s go?”
“Um...yeah. Let’s go.” He smiled and they both walked out to his jeep.
