"Yes Mrs Wellington, we found her still living at the last address. She haven't made any further movement towards tracking you down. You're in the clearing." Mrs Wellington had hired a private investigator to monitor and confirm Nadine's position. She was sure to have erased her past, she hoped never to return to Barbados or to the memory of it. She refused to answer any of the letters written to her from Nadine hoping she would give up contacting her. 'Why was she so relentless over the years? She couldn't afford to keep him and didn't want her son, so I had to save him from her.' She thought it over while going through unprocessed adoption papers in her bedroom. She placed the documents back in the envelope and tucked them away behind the large picture frame hanging over her bed.
"My son will be home any minute. Be sure to keep me updated if anything comes up. If she feels she can have my son she has another thing coming!" Nancy Wellington was determined to keeping the past silent. She was in Barbados working whilst going through a separation from her husband Thomas, who lived in Canada. The broke down came because she couldn't have children and her husband so desperately wanted to start a family. She kept it a secret from him that she was infertile and for years kept turning him around that she would have his baby once she finished university, but that time never came. Thomas asked for a divorce claiming he couldn't settle in that marriage, and wanted to move on. So, then came the opportunity to solving all her problems, in her opinion. She decided to deceive a little girl for her baby through the guise of adoption. To her it was the perfect plan.
When she returned with the baby she told her husband that she was pregnant when she went to Barbados and didn't tell him because she was devastated about him asking for a divorce. Thomas then blamed himself for pushing her away and having to go through a pregnancy and raising and child till then, on her own. He was crushed and vowed to always be there for her and the baby. She was ecstatic and she hadn't looked back not even once, till now.
"Yes Mrs Wellington, I understand your request." Her agent had covered the movement of Nadine for the past weeks after Zack found the old letters. He reported Nadine's whereabouts to Mrs. Wellington. "I will let you know if something comes up."
"Mom, I'm home." Zack ran up the stairs taking two steps at a time as he shouted.
Mrs Wellington heard his footsteps thundering through the hall. She didn't get the chance to hide one other document so she quickly tucked it under her bed.
"Bonsoir maman, ton fils est à la maison. Good evening mom your son is home." Zack ran over and threw his arms around her and kissed her cheek.
She felt a surge of excitement and relief. 'Yes my son.' She closed her eyes and allowed his embrace.
"Je suis désolé maman. I'm sorry mom. I didn't mean to upset you this week." Whenever Zack got into trouble he always tried to win his mother's forgiveness by speaking French. By age 7 he was already fluent, and when ever he spoke she was always delighted.
"Ça va, ça va. It's ok, it's ok." She patted his back. "How about we go visit grandpa and grandma Nelson and take a drive to picnic at Niagara Falls State Park for your birthday?"
"Really?" Zack lit up. He loved Niagara Falls, but haven't been there since it was his twelfth birthday. "Can I invite Charlie? He's never been to the Falls since he came here for school.
"Oh I don't know, we are talking about a weekend trip. I don't know if his parents would agree to that."
"Please, please, please," Zack chimed. " plus we always hung out on weekends, and it's not like we are kids that can't handle ourselves. "
"But this is different, we are going cross country this time, not just a weekend indoors." She tried for him to understand. "Why can't you hang with O'Brien and Charlotte?" She walked out the room and headed downstairs.
