The smell of bacon wafted into Lucas's room that morning. The morning he's supposed to meet with the author.
He groaned as he rolled over and almost fell off the bed. He had a hard time sleeping that night and he had no idea as to why.
His bed wasn't the most comfortable considering he's had it since he was fourteen.
He didn't want to sleep in his old room but he didn't have much of a choice. His mother explained to him at the airport that the guest room wasn't put together yet.
That was one of the first things on his mother's mind along with a bunch of other questions.
All these questions as if they didn't talk almost every week. All the way home it was nonstop talking but Lucas ended up drowning her out at one point.
The closer they drove into town, the more Deja vu he seemed to get.
The first summer they spent together.
The first day of Junior year.
His first kiss.
His first dance.
It all comes back just like it has done every time he comes home. He blocks most of that out for now.
Sometimes it's much stronger then others. He can admit that everything happened in the past and he let it go as much as he could these past six years.
"Have you seen him?" Lucas suddenly asked out of the blue.
His mother knew exactly who he was asking about. Longfellow Falls wasn't a very small town where everyone knew everyone but it was small enough that there was a good chance you could run into everyone who lived there.
"Um yeah, I saw him about a year ago."
"How was he?" Lucas asked, he couldn't help it.
"He was fine. I ran into him at the park so we didn't talk real long." She said, but it was quite clear she was holding something back.
Lucas twisted in his seat and studied her face for a minute before he asked, "What's wrong?"
"Nothing," she answered way to fast.
"What aren't you saying?"
"He's engaged, Lucas." She said and didn't look him in the eye.
"Oh." Lucas said and looked back out the window. He didn't really feel anything at all when he heard the news.
They could be married by now. It's not like Lucas ever thought that he might get back together with him but he hoped for awhile that he would.
Lucas was even shocked at himself of how little of a reaction he felt. They were adults now that hadn't seen each other in six years after dating in high school.
It felt so small to most people but it was way bigger then that to Lucas.
"Honey, I made breakfast." Lucas heard his mother call from downstairs snapping him out of his thoughts about the night before.
He stumbled downstairs, slowly with a tired expression on his face.
"Did you sleep well?"
"Um not really, when will the guest room be made up?"
"I'm finishing it today, honey." She said as she handed Lucas his plate.
Homecooked food was always Lucas's favorite thing about coming home. It gave him a sense of nostalgia, but a good feeling of nostalgia.
