-The wonderful sound of another sailor vomiting greeted George's ears early in the morning. He groaned, rubbing the sleep out of his eyes and sitting up straight.
Promptly hitting his head against the upper bunk.
He spat at the ground in frustration, clutching his forehead as he moseyed out of the sleeping quarters and onto the deck, passing by the sea-sick sailor.
He'd like to say he'd gotten used to life on the seven seas, but that was an overstatement. Somehow he had gotten worse at functioning on the ocean in the last three weeks.
He swayed as the soft waves lapped at the side of the ship, the powerful winds ripping through the air and forcing themselves in the cloth sail. The ship they were on was called The Dream, which was a fitting name for the gigantic vessel.
Speaking of dreams, the captain could be heard chuckling from his cabin, presumably talking to his first mate Sapnap. George was tempted to get closer, but his fear for the captain was unlike anything he'd felt before.
Maybe it was that no one knew what the captain looked like behind his smiley mask, or the fact no one even knew his real name. The pirates fantasized he came out of the sea on a magnificent seahorse and graced the land, but it was all jokes to George.
Captain Dream had truthfully come from a poor family, running away from home to bring them a fortune. When his parents declined his riches he returned with years later, Dream went on to pirate his own ship and crew.
No one knew that.
George himself came from a similar situation. His parents were long time mariners, and taught him the ropes of sailing very early on. They pushed George to become a sailor, and in an act of rebelliousness he left to become a pirate on Dream's vessel. Not like he regretted it, or anything.
A sudden weight on his shoulder signaled the arrival of another person, whose height was identical to his own. "Good morning, matee'!"
George looked at the gruff face of Sapnap, adorned with a bustling beard and kind brown eyes. He had been the only one to believe in George at first, and George greatly owed him. "G'morning, sir."
"How's the sea sickness today?" Sapnap led George to the railing of the ship, a toothy pirate grin never dropping from his features.
George giggled. "I'm healthy today, sir." His curiosity got the better of him. "What were you and Captain speaking about?"
"You!" Sapnap clapped his hand against the brunettes back, nearly toppling him over into the crystal blue depths below.
"Me?" He asked in befuzzlement.
"I told him you were doing great adjusting to the life of a pirate," Sapnap clarified. "He's had an eye on you for awhile."
George opened his mouth to repeat himself, but closed it again, and settled on nodding. "Oh."
"Yea. I reckon he'll promote you to third in command in no time." Sapnap assured him, backing away. "Don't forget to clean out the rats, and find that damn cat in the food compartment."
"Aye aye," George tested on his tongue. Pirate speak never came naturally to him, and Sapnap's smirk relayed that to him. George grumbled something inaudible, and opened the hatch downstairs.
