I cautiously approached the kings door, of which was lacking knights. I put my head gently on said door to try to hear more precisely. All that was heard were sobs and sniffles. My eyebrows furrowed, I knew he was distraught about Gwen's departure with Lancelot, but I never thought he'd break like this... My heart ached at the thought of seeing the King with anguish both in his heart and displayed on his face with tears making their way down  and off his chin. I settled my hand down on the door carefully before pushing to find that, to my luck, the door was unlocked. I pushed it smoothly and painstakingly and made my way anxiously to find Arthur.

He was sat atop his bed cross-legged looking out towards the window. The curtains were slightly parted which gave us the view of the moonlit sky. I could see his body shake with every wail or whimper. He started mumbling before he brung his hands to rush through and pull at his hair. He then let his hands slide down his face when he started chastising himself for crying and about how he shouldn't be feeling the way he does.

I felt like I was intruding in on something too personal, so I turned around to leave, but as I did so, I collided with a small table which held a fragile object which (to no one's surprise) broke. Arthur jolted up, grabbed his sword and in a few seconds had me pinned to the ground with his sword directed at my throat. Once he realized it was me, his stoic eyes faded back to the broken ones he had bared only a few seconds prior. He hadn't wiped away the tears of which were glistening and falling freely in the reflection of the moon. I'd never seen Arthur so grief-stricken, and it made my heart sink heavily. He took my hands and lifted me on my feet before shoving me and shouting at me that I had no right to enter his chambers at night without his permission. I hadn't responded to his words of anger and grief, I simply slowly reached my hand out to his face. I kept my eyes locked on his uncertain ones to make sure to know how far was too far. My king shouldn't have to suffer at any cost. My slim and bony fingers brushed against the warm, soft, wet skin of his face. I wiped his tears away and sorrow became an evident element on my face.

"What happened to you, Arthur?" His lip quivered but he hadn't dared to say anything. "I heard you crying, I heard you discipline yourself... Is it because of Gwen?" Tears, once more, poured from his eyes while he shook his head horizontally. He clung onto my shirt before trying to harden his face and stabilizing his voice.

"You should go, Merlin." He breathed unevenly.

"No, I won't leave you like this." I said, tears brimming at my own eyes.

"Merlin... please..." His voice broke and his morose eyes peared at me. He looked and felt fragile. As it was my destiny to help him build his kingdom, it should also be my destiny to help him with all else, this above all cases. I took hold of his arm and sat us both on his bed before pulling him to my chest. He instantaneously started crying. I placed one hand on his back, rubbing irregular patterns, and the other stroked his hair, close to the bottom of his right ear. He clenched fistfuls of my shirt  and in a desperately manner, hung onto me tighter. I felt my stomach erupt with tingling, happy sensations, but I had to push it aside for Arthur's sake.

"I-... I j--" He started crying harder, I've never seen him so distressed.

"Shh, Arthur. If you don't want to tell me I respect that, just please come to me if you're ever feeling like this ever again." I felt his hair ruffle my chin as he nodded. I felt extremely curious, but I had felt resistance in his voice. I wanted to help him and the only way to do that was to let him take his time. Maybe we'll grow closer after this?

I sighed contentedly, but also with concern. Arthur needed me and I had to push my feelings aside for him. What could possibly be  troubling him. He basically said it wasn't Gwen... then his father, maybe? What could it be?
