Hawks

Chapter 1

"GHALI! GET BACK UP HERE!" Freyha screeched. "Okay okay" A large ferruginous hawk glided up to the nest. He had glistening brown eyes and light light brown feathers. He had a pale white underbelly, and was tall and lean. "Did you find anything?" Hgala ran up to him hopefully. She had bright blue eyes and pinkish feathers. She also had a white underbelly. Freyha had white feathers, and shiny yellow eyes. "I found this," Ghali threw a mouse in the nest. "That's not enough to feed all of us. Maybe when we were eyas but no. Go out there and hunt something else" Freyha ordered, and Ghali dove down while Hgala ate the mouse with no hesitation.

Ghali glided back up with a snake. "You.. DAMN DINGBAT! WE CAN'T EAT THIS! ITS TOO SMALL AND STILL ALIVE!" The snake slithered out of the nest. "Go out there and hunt something else. Something big, like a rabbit or something" Freyha looked over at a rabbit bouncing along a plateau across from theirs. It noticed them, and began running. Ghali rolled his eyes and dove down. He glided back up, his long claws out. He landed, and began chasing the prey on foot. He bit at it, bouncing up in the air every once in a while. He finally managed to kill the rabbit. By the time that happened they were at the bottom of the plateau at the foot of the cacti forest. He grabbed the rabbit in his talons and brought it back up.

"This is a proper dinner" Freyha puffed out her chest and ate. Hgala was asleep. "What about her?" Ghali asked. "Forget her. She ate that damn mouse you brought up. She won't need to eat." Freyha hissed. Ghali brought a leg to Hgala and woke her up. Freyha looked at Ghali like he said he forgot how to fly. "I have a heart, Freyha. Maybe you don't" Ghali ruffled up his feathers while hearing one of Freyha's boring lectures about how he's a disrespectful hawk and he should be ashamed. Ghali fell asleep in the middle of one of Freyha's talks.

Ghali woke up to a screaming Freyha. A large Dhandi swooped down and tried attacking the nest. "Likan" Ghali screeched under his breath as the large Harris hawk dove down and tried to pick up Hgala. "Why you-" Ghali thrusted up into the air. "Oh Ghali. Sweet sweet Ghali. Thinking you can save a hawk who's already dead" Likan dove down again, but screamed when Ghali headbutted his stomach. "Ow!" Likan shifted his gave to Ghali, and flew toward him. "When will you learn your sisters are dead?" The two hawks crashed into each other, talons scraping and screams of pain shattering the clear blue sky above. Likan turned his head to Freyha and Hgala. He flew toward them, but Ghali screamed. "No!" He rammed into Likan's side, hearing a loud SNAP! As he snapped his wing into a horrific pose. Likan began flapping in fear. "If I go down your coming with me, brat!" Likan snapped his claws with Ghali. He stuck one of his claws into his eye, making Ghali scream in pain. Ghali flew back up, the only wound was a missing eye. His left eye was torn out, and bleeding horribly. He looked down, and saw Likan laying on the hot sand, dead. Ghali was panting and breathing heavily. "I did it" "Almost did it" Hgala pat his eye socket. "That looks wrong. Like someone tore a hole through your face" "That's kind of what happened, Hgala. It hurts" Ghali pat it with his front talon. 

"It looks like an improvement to me" Freyha chuckled. "You look far more ugly like that" "What is your problem?! Our brother could have died. The only hawk we have to protect us!" Hgala hissed. "Hey, hey! You have me to protect you. Not only that excuse for a hawk" Freyha nodded toward Ghali. "He's not an excuse! Your an excuse! Stop being so mean and grow up!" Hgala rushed to Ghali and snuggled him, glaring at Freyha like she wished she could kill her. Freyha shrugged and continued on with her day.
