" In which a bashful gunman is put a little out of his comfort zone, but his mother goose instinct isn't necessarily complaining. "

You winced as you picked at the scab forming on your arm. You could recall the exact date and mission you got it on, too.
It was nothing but a slip up at first, but then again, isn't that how it all starts? You had been exploring an abandoned lab in a back alleyway in town, looking for remnants of any paperwork or blueprints you could sell for some extra cabbage. Lupin had come back from the last mission, so, naturally, everyone was scraping the bottom of the barrel. Especially with Goemon back in Iga training and Fujiko off in some foreign planet scrounging around for some loose change.

You were ambushed by five men. You don't know if they owned the joint or were looking for the same thing you were, but regardless, you ended up with a pair of hands around your throat, ready to kill for the prize.
You're lucky you made it out alive.

You were fine for most of the day, just a little shaken. You of course neglected to tell Lupin and Jigen, telling them to look for another gig and that it was a dead end. Lupin nodded along, but Jigen gave you a confused head tilt before looking back at the map of New York - where you currently resided. You called it a night early as your throat began to feel sore.

The next morning- or rather, very late that night, you felt dizzy as you sat up in bed. You had woken up to Lupin banging on your door and mumble-yelling in Japanese. Something along the lines of "Pops and his poodle on our tail, hurry!"

The only response you could really have that late at night was a chuckle and an "okay!" Processing the fact that he had caught on to you calling Yata 'Zenigata's Toy Poodle' - and yet glazing over the urgent warning until seconds later.

You raced down the stairs, a few gunshots occupying the late night rain and the thundering of your feet down the stairs. Your heart caught up in your throat - eyes finding it hard to focus and find a safe space.

God, you hoped you could get through this one.

You launched yourself out of the back door, looking around for the loud hum of the fiat. Stopping in your tracks, your glossy eyes looked around, completely lost in your situation.
As you mumbled a soft "Daisuke?" Your knees gave way, and you slipped out of consciousness.

" . . . "

Your eyes struggled to open as you felt the ground beneath you fall away from your back. Something had caught you under your arms.
You tried to grasp at the wet soil but all you could manage to do was move your arm.

Too weak.

You felt whoever- or whatever- was holding you grab your arm and place it back onto your chest. Your face brushed against a crisp suit jacket - watering down your options to either Lupin or Jigen. You urged your eyes to blink open, and for a second, you could make out the outline of a fair complexion trimmed in black fuzz.

Jigen.

Shamefully, you let your mind imagine the picture - damn, he must be strong.
You were unfortunately pushed out of that safe space as you heard another gunshot ring out. Your mind recognized it as the ring of Lupin's pistol.
