My eyes darted toward the blur of green and brown passing by me as I sat in the back of a large, black cab beside my belongings. In sight were large, thin trees and vast fields reaching beyond the eye.
Before my departure, my father didn't give me much recognition other than a mere "do well", but I suppose that's just who he is. I sigh out loud and rest my head on the leather seat, letting my eye lids droop in exhaustion.
"Are you okay, ma'am?", the chauffeur asked softly, looking at me through the rear-view mirror with a sweet smile.
I lift from the head rest and give a quick smile, "Just a bit nervous, but thank you Albert". And he nodded his head, focusing his attention back to the road.
Albert's been our personal driver for as long as I can remember, and he's the most pleasant old man I've ever known and cherished. He's always taken care of me as a child, as though my second father. To be honest, I treasure him as my second father too.
As my thoughts were scrambling, I begin to notice the change of scenery and look back outside the window to see a large, alluring campus split into multiple buildings. I spot impressive water fountains and a vary of beautifully colored plants scattered across the front. But most of all I see a ray of students, who from what I assume look to be from similar wealthy backgrounds due to how they have dressed themselves.
"It's beautiful isn't it ma'am". Albert said as he parked up near to the gates.
"I keep telling you to call me Riley" I say jokingly. "It... definitely is beautiful. More than that actually". I speak lightly, looking to the floor with a tinge of sadness.
"I understand how you must feel, your father can be difficult. You can call me if you ever need anything, okay?". Albert said, reassuring me.
I nod and force a little smile, and he nodded back. I watch as Albert steps out of the cab and opens the door for me, letting me step out as he grabs my luggage.
Although anxious, the smell of fresh, grassy air hits me and refreshes my system in a comforting way.
Albert leaves my belongings on the ground and stands in front of me,
"Is that all, ma'am?". He asked.
"Don't be so formal silly". I reply, and embrace Albert in a long, needed hug before I leave. I let go and I notice him giving me another smile.
"Good luck, Riley", he spoke.
I nod and pick up my bag, slugging it over my shoulder along with a single suitcase in my hand.
"See you soon Al".
______________________________I find myself standing to check myself in at admissions, waiting in a queue that seemed to be lasting a life time before I realized I was next in line.
The lady at the desk signed me in and gave me the relevant information I needed, along with my student ID and a singular key to my dorm which was located in the female block across the campus from admissions. According to the lady, dorms are assigned to a maximum of two students to ensure smooth and effective studying, and less trouble.
"I wonder what type of person my roommate will be like", I think to myself.
After a long walk including almost getting lost throughout the hallways of this very large and busy block I manage to find my assigned room listed as '83', which was a few floors up. I fiddle in my pocket, pinching my key and placing it into the keyhole. With a quick inhale to build my confidence, I turn the key and open the door and peer through to see a fairly large room with generously sized beds, desks and wardrobes. However, what I don't see is any sign of someone else having entered yet.
I sigh, feeling stupid and enter my room with more confidence. I waver to the left side of the room and drop my heavy belongings to the ground before having another scan of the room that will be mine for the next years to come.
"This university definitely is prestigious", I think to myself as I look to the draping, silky curtains covering a large glossy window and the two white cotton, large beds. Every room even has it's own personal, miniature bathrooms.
Distracted by my snooping, I didn't hear the click of a lock behind me until I heard a very enthusiastic "Hiya!".
I instinctively jump out of my skin in panic, whizzing my head around to see another girl.
I quickly observe her, taking notice of her short height, long brown hair and hazel eyes. I look lower to see an unusually put together outfit, compiled of red plaid trousers paired with a plaid jacket and a cropped vest laying underneath. And finally a pair of thick, black boots.
"Are you okay?". The girl asked stepping closer and waving a hand in front of my face, snapping me out of my bubble.
"Oh sorry". I say like an idiot. "Nice to meet you, I'm Riley. I'm guessing you're my roommate?". I say.
"It's okay!", she laughs without dropping her smile.
"Nice to meet you. I suppose I am". She replies.
I glance over her again, spotting a singular small bag looking as though it were barely packed. She definitely doesn't seem like the ordinary, snobby students attending this university, I thought.
"I don't think I caught your name", I ask slightly intrigued.
"Oh my bad, I forgot the most important thing". She giggled, putting her hand at the back of her head in embarrassment.
"My name is Olivia. Olivia Wills".
