I'm still in awe that I'm sat in the dorm of one of the leading university's around and have successfully passed one day.
Classes don't officially start until tomorrow, so I've spent the day wandering around the campus and getting myself accustomed to classes, the library and other useful facilities that the university has to offer. I've also managed to pack away my things into their rightful places, including my jumble of clothes and toiletries. And so now, I find myself rummaging to find a set of pajamas to hop into and rest early for my class tomorrow.
My roommate from what I've gathered, is named Olivia and is sat over on her side of the room which isn't all that far as the beds are reasonably near. Personality wise, she has an eager mouth, in which she talks and smiles beyond a normal limit. It also appears that she isn't as fortunately wealthy as most here.
"So Riley, what classes do you take?" Olivia sat, legs crossed on her bed staring at me eagerly.
"I've taken up business, along with Spanish as my extra curricular". I respond. "You?".
"Business? That's tough". She laughs.
"Just kidding. I've taken psychology and coincidentally, Spanish too". she answers seriously, for once.
"Maybe I should be relieved to have a friend in the same class" I think to myself, before finally grabbing my set of pajamas and begin peeling off my shirt, revealing my black lace bra and tossing the shirt onto my bed. I glance over to Olivia who was sat plum faced, averting her eyes from me and fidgeting with her hands.
"Are... you alright?" I ask, eyebrows furrowed in confusion. "Your face has gone red".
She laughs nervously, covering her face.
"I'm sorry, I probably should've mentioned something that will probably seem a little rude of me now". She responds, clearly shy.
"What do you mean?" I ask again, even more confused.
"I'm a le..." she mumbles into her hand, looking away.
I step closer to her, tilting my head to the side with my ear facing her. "What was that, speak up". I say.
"I'm a lesbian, I like girls".
That was the last thing we said to each other for that night, other than a "sorry" that escaped my lips, purely out of what I could tell was embarrassment.
I've never met a girl that likes other girls, so I didn't take it into consideration but quickly popped my pajamas on afterward.
"I'll apologize again when I get the chance, I thought before closing my eyes and naturally drifting off to sleep, hearing the faint, soft hoot of an owl outside and the whoosh of the wind passing by.
___________________________A bright, ray of sunlight intruded through the window, illuminating and filling the room. I squinted my eyes, before retracting from my new bed in surprise, and realizing I wasn't at home but in my new dorm. I snatch my phone beside me, staring with thin eyes.
'8:39'
I almost yelp in shock, and scramble to my feet and begin rushing around for clothes.
"I'm such an idiot!", I say out-loud whilst throwing on a maroon vest and black blazer, with a pair of jeans to match. I look to my side to see Olivia, laying like a brick in her bed unfazed by her surroundings and still asleep.
"Olivia! Get up!" I demand but get nothing, not even a mere twitch of an eye. I sigh, and grab my bag in defeat before storming out of my room, not wanting to be late.
I make my way to my first Spanish class, which according to the lady I met yesterday was in the C block near the dorms, labelled room '14'. Barely on time, I find my classroom and compose myself before strolling in. I scan my surroundings, noticing a grand classroom with a few students already dotted around.
"Where should I sit...", I wonder to myself, slowly edging myself into the classroom.
"Oh my God, Riley is that you?" an awfully familiar voice asks behind me.
I turn around to see a girl not much taller than me, with silky short black hair and a sophisticated choice of outfit entailing a dark smart shirt and flowing skirt.
"It's me! Elsie, remember?" Elsie said, smiling bright.
My eyes widened in surprise, before jumping for a hug.
Els was my closest friend back when we were kids, but due to unfortunate circumstances got separated and never saw each other again. But we spent most of our childhood with each other, and did almost everything as a duo.
"Of course I remember! I'm so happy to see you, it's been so long!" I reply with joy.
Our reunite got disrupted by the sound of an ahem, to which I spun around to see an older woman in her late 60's.
"If you'd like to take a seat, ladies", the old lady demanded, who I assumed was our teacher.
And so we both smiled at each other and complied, making our way to some empty seats paired next to each other.
"We'll catch up later", Elsie smiled, and I nodded eagerly.
"Of course", I whispered.
However, what I didn't realize at this moment in time is that yet again another person had entered my life who would without a doubt, change the course of my life.
But for the better or worse, is unknown.
