Emily and Ser Davos entered the snowy courtyard filled with rugided men. As they walked further into the courtyard people's heads started turning watching her approach a dummy made of straw held up by a lanky, wooden post.
Some of the men looked at her with annoyance or anger, but she could tell a few had desperation in their eyes. Emily knew that no man would try to take advantage of her because of the fate bestowed on the three men who tried last night. Men dressed in black furs and leather were spread all over the courtyard and some were on the balconies above them. All the eyes were on her. She refused to cower under their gazes. The Night's Watch wasn't for the weak and emotional.
She looked over at Ser Davos who was eyeing all the leering men.
"So.. What shall we do first?" she asked clapping her hands together.
Emily had Winter strapped across her waist and she thought it's weight was increasing by the second. The clap seemed to knock everyone out of their trance's, even Ser Davos sharply turned his head and gave her a reassuring smile. The smile seemed to be for comforting himself... not Emily.
"Let's see you put that sword of your's to use," he said pointing at Winter. Emily gave a confident smirk at his suggestion.
"My father bought this sword for me in King's landing... well he really isn't my father anymore. He practically disowned me," she said walking towards the target. Emily withdrew her sword with ease and looked down at the Valyrian steel. Winter was almost as big and thick as any King's sword.
"It took me a while to get used to the weight.." she said then cleanly sliced the dummy's head off from it's body. "...but everything takes a little practice." She finished in the perfect stance with her sword at her side in one hand. She stood tall and let out a breath.
"Winter is made out of Valyrian steel, Ser Davos. Are you aware of it's lordliness above all the other metals?" she asked him still looking at the straw head on the ground, cleanly cut from its body. Emily saw flashes of different faces on the fake head.
...her father ... Alliser Thorne... The men who attacked her... Queen Cersei
"Yes of course, the steel will stay sharp forever and well it's rarity is hard to forget,"he said slightly laughing. Ser Davos let out one important detail about the metal though and she knew he didn't want to say it.
"...and it kills the unkillable, Davos. Let's not forget that," she said patting him on the shoulder and started walking to the archery targets with Ser Davos following her closely.
"M'lady... you believe in the White Walkers?" he questioned her from behind.
"I believe in anything and everything- that way nothing can surprise me," she said lightheartedly and put Winter back in her waistband.
Out of no where an arrow comes flying down from the terraces around them and whizzing past her head. The arrow enters the ground firmly and an inch away from her foot. Emily looked up with a confused look on her face to see a bearded man already looking down at her with a playful gleam. The man didn't try to hide the bow in his grip.
"Sorry..M"LADY... must have been a misfire," he said snickering over to the man at his right.
Emily grabbed Ser Davos dagger in his waistband swiftly and threw the dagger into the wooden frame they were under. The dagger landed inches away from both their heads and held firmly into the wood. Everyone heard the satisfying noise of the knife splitting open the wood.
"Mrs. Castor if you are going to throw knifes, do it at the targets on the wall. The numbers here are small enough," a voice said from the terrace behind her. She looked at the terrace and saw Jon standing with his both his hands resting on the wooden guardrail. His face didn't hold any amusement like she thought it would.
Does he not see the arrow in the ground a foot away from me?
A part of her wanted to complain and say the men started it, but if she wanted to be in the Night's Watch she was going to have to accept the authority.
"Of course, Lord Commander," she said with strain in her voice hoping he'd notice. Jon just gave her a stern nod back and left out of sight.
The fellow Night's Watch were still perplexed at her accuracy with throwing daggers. Besides sword fighting... throwing knives were her favorite.
"I'd appreciate a little heads up next time," Ser Davos grumbled still looking at his dagger in the frame. The two men she threw it at were long gone.
"Sorry it was just instinct to grab your's. I'll go get it," she said apologizing and running up the stairs before he could offer to retrieve it himself.
Emily reached the frame and about only half the dagger was sticking out of the wood, the rest was snuggly lodged inside the wood. Her small frame wasn't able to get a good grip on the leather grip of the knife above her head. While she struggled to reach it a large hand came from behind and easily pulled the dagger out from the frame. She quickly spun around about to disarm the stranger, thinking it was one of the men she threatened. Emily was greeted by Jon who was handing her the dagger.
"Thank you, Commander Snow," she said with no emotion and grabbed the dagger.
"Anytime," he said kindly.
"Oh there will be no other time. I'm strictly going to be throwing them at specific targets only instead of men's heads," she said sarcastically with a sickly sweet smile. Jon's eyes quickly fell from her face, he gave her a curt nod and walked away silently.
Emily went back down and tossed Ser Davos his dagger, which he caught effortlessly. "I need to get me a dagger just like that or I'll be stealing your's more often then not," she joked.
