HAZEL POV:

The first week went by pretty smoothly.

The jocks and I had several more skate sessions after school at the nearby skate park. Some of them had scooters, some had BMX bikes, and the others had skateboards. Me and Livy were the only ones with rollerskates. We'd exchanged our numbers and I was even added into their group chat.

Schoolwork came in atrocious amounts but with the help of caffeine and a lot of late nights, I managed to pull it all off.  I had an IEP (individual education plan or some shit), so I essentially did less paper-pencil work and more hands on, got more time for assignments and was given both oral and written instructions. My work was often broken down into little parts so I could tackle it one step at a time, because if I did it all at once, my paper on social injustice would somehow end up talking about the Salem Witch Trials and Shrek.

Mr. Barkas, my English teacher, is incredible. It was like he understood everything I go through with this stupid ADHD business. He gave me a ton of hands on puzzles and logic riddles, always patiently explained things to me, and even bought me a squishy stress ball for in-class use!

Long live Mr. Barkas.  I love that man.

Anyways, it was my second weekend in Gotham (the first week we were just unpacking ), and I was up and at 'em at five in the morning, thanks to drinking an excessive amount of coffee and Red Bull last night, full of energy and all ready for my first day at the newest Gotham wildlife rescue centre.

After pulling on my uniform and gathering my equipment, I hurry out of my room and crane my head into Ma's room.

She's clearly awake, trying to melt into the pillows, her skinny body curled up under the covers.

"Ma, do you want me to make you breakfast?" I whisper yelled into her room. "Yay or nay?"

She throws a pillow straight into my face, knocking me over.

"Oof!"

'Couldn't you keep it down? You woke me up, you little sh*t'.

She signs angrily, sitting up in her bed.

" Aren't you so charming in the morning?"  I scoff, tossing the pillow back onto her bed before entering her room.

'Don't sass me around at this hour, Hazel.'

"Sorry Ma. You had a long day yesterday, I understand." I tuck her back into the bed, a strand of my hair falling out of my braid as I smooth out the wrinkles in the blankets and flip her pillow over to the colder side.

Her anger melts away, and she pushes the strand of hair behind my ear, settling back into the bed.  'Sorry, darling. You know your Ma gets grumpy when you wake her up at unholy hours of the day'. She signs at me.

" So that's who I get it from...." I grin.

She swats me with a huff, rolling her eyes. 'Be careful at the Wildlife Center, and DON'T piss anyone off. Nobody likes a smartass.'

"I get it, Ma. I get it. So, no breakfast? I can get the pancake mix ready if you want so-"

She shakes her head, cutting me off.  'I'll make it myself. Last time you made pancakes, you blew up the microwave.'

"I was SIX, Ma! Don't you think ten years is enough time to gain enough motor skills to make pancakes yet? Jeez, you've been blabbing about the same thing for a decade!

' You're still a child at heart, darling. I'd like to keep it that way.'

"What does that have to do with pancakes?" I huff.
