Astrea was sitting right across him but his courage decided to fail him once again. It had failed him once before when he couldn't stand up to his 'friends' and tell them to stop picking on his brother. He had failed his brother that time. Axton had seen the sadness in Cassius' eyes that were once filled with hope and curiosity. Hopefully this boy, Dorin, could help fix it. Cassius always held onto his little finger when he was pretending or lying, and he wasn't doing that when he was happily chatting Dorin's ears off. When Astrea smiled, he couldn't help but smile right back and he couldn't help chuckle when Dorin whispered in his ear, "why don't you come over? It's hard to make friends with someone just by staring at them!"
Before Axton could process what was happening, he was sitting next to Dorin, which was coincidentally opposite of Astrea. He could feel vines crawling up his arms as he tried to stay calm, his "friends" hadn't even noticed his absence.
He was hoping that his hands didn't suddenly betray him and bloom some flowers from his palm. He didn't have very much control over his emotions or his flowers. He resorted to hiding it long enough that no one found out. Even considering all the other strange powers at the Academy people still found his power strange, a daffodil had once fallen out his nose in front of someone he had thought to be his friend, but she'd been disgusted by him.
He waited for the food to appear on his plate so he could distract himself. Axton couldn't help but look back at his friends again to see if they had noticed. They hadn't.Then Sam had asked him to show his power. He had been hesitant, but then Dorin had grinned at him.He let go of the small amount of control he had and waited to see the result. Petal by petal, a blood red rose that looked as if it were dipped in his own blood emerged from his hand. Then the familiar golden dust sprinkled out from his fingertips, the rose blossomed out, covering his whole palm.
He looked at the two new siblings, worried that they would be staring at him in disgust, but Dorin was beaming and his sister was also smiling at him. Axton relaxed, maybe he could make some real friends.
