On the night of the dance, everybody was dressed in their costumes. Sophia was wearing her safari princess costume, and when she entered the gym, everybody stopped and stared at her in amazement.
"Wow, Sophia, you look beautiful," said Hugo, dressed like Prince Charming.
"Thanks," said Sophia blushing. She felt proud of how she made her costume, and she was instantly becoming the Belle of the Ball.
Meanwhile, Melanie had arrived with her peacock costume. Everybody—even Sophia—was amazed by Melanie's costume.
"Melanie, that's an amazing costume," said Sophia.
"I know," said Melanie haughtily.
A little while later, it was time to announce the winner of the costume contest.
"The winner of the costume contest is...," announced Principal Winston, "...Melanie Crenshaw!"
Everybody cheered, and Principal Winston presented the trophy to Melanie.
"And I have a special surprise for everybody too," said Principal Winston. "Since Thursday is Halloween, ten students with the best costumes will be part of our Halloween fashion show!"
Everybody roared in applause. Since Melanie, Sophia, and Hugo were the first three of the 10 students wearing the best costumes, they got to be in the fashion show.
