Chapter 1
"I think you should just ask him out."
Catherin tore her eyes from her current obsession, adjusting her over-sized glasses and looked at her friend. They were currently sitting in the cafeteria for lunch so bad that Catherin swore it was her punishment for throwing Mrs. Carters' hamburger in the bin. Catherin hadn't had the heart to tell the old lady she was a vegetarian after Mrs. Carters had gone through all the trouble for cooking food for her.
Brittany rolled her eyes, "Come on, you obviously like him and you two would make such a cute couple."
"And Miss Cupid, why exactly would that guy go out with a nerd like me?" Catherin asked in a matter of fact tone. She wasn't fishing for compliments; she was well aware of her flaws and had long accepted that she wasn't girlfriend material. She much rather sit at home reading a book than go to some wild party and that was something no guy wanted. Still, there was nothing wrong with looking and imagining. And her eye candy of whopping two years was certainly something to look at.
Gary Richards was six feet two inches tall, football team captain, and according to his Facebook profile, he had a golden retriever named Snuffles.
What? Facebook was meant for the art of investigation. Catherin doubted there was any teenage girl familiar with the world wide who hadn't stalked her crush on Facebook.
"You are not a nerd," Brittany was quick to jump to her friend's defense, even when the attack was launched by the said friend. "The dictionary meaning of the word is 'a foolish or contemptible person who lacks social skills or is boringly studious ' which you are not. You just like reading," Brittany explained.
"Which is obviously a trait that the guys love their girlfriends to have. And did you seriously memorize the meaning of nerd for my benefit?" Catherin asked and opened her copy of the Wuthering Heights to distract herself from staring at Gary which would hopefully lead Brittany to drop the conversation.
If only things were that easy. Brittany simply shrugged off the latter statement and trudged on towards her original argument, "I am telling you, you can get this guy. At least go and talk to him."
Catherin raised her eyebrows. She could recite Macbeth and Julius Caesar by heart, but what she couldn't do was talk to guy, a hot one at that. Another flaw to add to the growing list.
"At least try! You won't mess it up this time. Oh! I have an idea," Brittany's eyes lit up and Catherin knew she was not going to like what was coming next one bit. "We could use a Bluetooth device to communicate and so when you don't know what to say, I can help you."
"You do realize this isn't some cheesy rom-com of Hollywood, don't you?" Catherin asked.
Brittany frowned, "But that stuff works!"
"In movies. This is real life, welcome fellow human."

How about we give you a makeover! That will make you more confident while talking to Gary.
Catherin looked at the note Brittany passed. She glanced up to see Mr. Harris droning about the ancient Mesopotamian era and quickly scribbled her reply.
Hell no! I like the way I look!
We throw a party, get you drunk.
How is that supposed to help? You know I go crazy when I drink.
Exactly. You are HILARIOUS! :P
Catherin smiled despite herself. She didn't remember much about the one night she was wasted at her older brother's eighteenth birthday party except that when she woke the next morning her father's study was crashed and he didn't speak to her for four whole hours. Personally, Catherin blamed her brother. You simply cannot have vodka bottles lying around at a party when your fourteen year old baby sister is there!
"Miss Lawrence, Miss Drayton, it would be really helpful if you refrain from passing chits in class," Mr. Harris confiscated the paper they had been passing around and gave it a cursory glance.
Catherin smiled at him innocently and thanked her gods when the bell rang signaling the end of the class.
"That was epic!" Brittany declared, grinning changing into her gym clothes.
"You know what would have happened if he read that out loud in class?" Thankfully Mr. Harris wasn't a sadist so there were very slim chances that he would have actually taken any action even if the bell hadn't gone off when it did.
"It would have made things much easier. He-who-must-not-be-named would have come to know that you like him. And then-
"God! I really don't want to hear another movie plot!" Catherin groaned and walked towards the field.
"What are they doing here? They are not in our gym class," Brittany whispered.
Good question, Catherin thought and stared at Gary Richards in the middle of the green field who was surrounded by his ever-present group of friends.
"Class, Miss Walter was busy so I agreed to swap classes with her. So Section B will be joining us in gym class today," Coach Peters announced.
Catherin groaned.
"It's destiny," Brittany whispered, her eyes shining.
