Chapter 3

What did he say?

We never learn, Catherin thought, looking at the chit Brittany had passed.

He wanted to know if I had a concussion.

You mean he was making fun of you? >:[ that bastard!

Catherin smiled at the easy way Brittany always took her side, even when she acted like a fool.

I don’t know; I was too busy making a fool of myself.

What do you mean?

I told him fun facts about toilets…

A loud guffaw to Catherin’s right made her duck her head; Brittany was on her way to disrupt the class.

“Is there something wrong, Miss Lawrence?” Mrs. Stewart asked, looking at Brittany from the top of her half-moon glasses.

“Not at all-“ Brittany broke off to manage another fit of giggles that assailed her.

Catherin put up her.

“Yes, Miss Drayton.”

“It’s actually a medical condition, Mrs. Stewart. When we laugh unintentionally and repeatedly, we may be experiencing pathological laughter. That's a sign of an underlying disease or medical condition that usually affects the nervous system, and researchers are still learning more about this phenomenon. Pathological laughter usually isn't associated with humor, mirth or any other expression of happiness. our brain is the like the cockpit of our nervous system. It sends signals that control involuntary actions like breathing as well as voluntary actions like walking or laughing. When those signals go awry-

“Are you trying to say that Miss Lawrence is suffering from a mental imbalance,” Mrs. Stewart asked.

“Sadly, that’s what the doctors suspect but a few tests are still going on and hopefully it’s curable,” Catherin said in a matter of fact tone.

“Oh, um, let’s move on to page one hundred and sixty three. Mr. Keynes please starting reading from second paragraph onwards,” Mrs. Stewart said.

Catherin winked at Brittany and they did and air high-fi but quickly rearranged their expression into a somber mask when they saw Mrs. Stewart looking at them.

“You are awesome!” Brittany said as they waited for the mathematics professor to arrive. “Even if you did portray me as an imbecile.”

“I know, gracias,” Catherin said with fake bow.

“Brittany, I am so sorry to hear about your condition,” Mark said, standing beside her desk. “I know it must be hard time for you and your family and if there is anything I can do, please don’t hesitate to ask.”

“Mark, Catherin was joking,” Brittany told him.

He sighed, “It’s quite alright to be in denial in the initial stage but the sooner you accept reality, the easier this will be,” he said, patting her arm in consolation.

Mr. Conner arrived at that moment and Mark went back to his usual seat on the first bench.

“What the hell is wrong with that boy?” Brittany asked, opening her calculus text book.
