It was a day like every other. Few people around, on the hunt for others like me. Walking. Breathing. Alive.
They all try to kill me. Even if they do not look like they got hit in the face a million times.
I was looking for... well. Anything. A person like me mostly, but food as well. Berries, deer or rabbits. Anything edible really. In the short five years that I knew my father, he showed me how to hunt and find edible berries. I also taught myself a fair lot, I know that if a deer is eating berries then I can eat those too and how to make a trap that you cover up with leaves and stuff and then unsuspecting prey walk right through it. TWANG!! Up they go in my amazing trap. Sometimes there is more than one!
I was walking towards one of my traps when I heard someone talking. Not groaning like everyone else I see. It was a person like me. Only with short hair and their voice sounded deeper than mine. I was deeply confused, a person who could speak and wriggle around in a trap I set up, unlike the others who just stayed still looking blankly into the distance until they noticed me. Then they would start thrusting around until they could get near me to either kill me or scratch me to make me like them.
This was a strange person. When it saw me it stopped moving? It then asked me to cut it down. I nodded and cut the rope that was keeping it in the air and it fell with a crash and was all wrapped up in the net. I giggled as the strange talking person flailed around trying to get out of the net. After a couple of minutes, the person got out of the net and stood up - I had my knife ready in case it attacked me. But it did not. It looked at me and smiled I was deeply concerned about this strange being. "T-thanks, I guess. You made this trap, didn't you?" It asked, I simply nodded. "Cool! I didn't even see it and I've been taught how to spot traps like this. It must have taken ages to set up," it continued. I just looked at it. Confused as to what I had to do now with this strange being. Everyone else I come across tries to kill me. So... why was this one different? "Hey? Are you okay?" It spoke to me yet again, "w-what are y-you?" I asked cursing at myself for stuttering. The person looked confused, "what do you mean 'what are you' I am what I am. And what I am is a human boy. A boy of whom you may call Felix. You are?"
"I am Sparrow," I did not wish to tell it my name, but it had already introduced itself so it would have been rude to not tell it who I was. "That's a cute name. Believe it or not, sparrows are my favourite bird. They are small and cute and they don't give a crap if you go near them," it said smiling at me. I was still confused as to what was happening but this "boy" seemed to be to calm for my liking, "why are you here?" I asked it, it looked at me in a confused manner, then it seemed to realize that this was an awkward situation. "Oh! Um... I'm here because my father noticed a lot of well-made traps in the area, and we decided to go look for whomever it was that set up these traps and ask them how they were so good at it and if they wanted to join us on our trek to a safe town. Hopefully to then help us with our hunting. Basically, I'm asking if you want to join me, Sparrow," Felix said to me. I merely looked at it, until some other person that looked much like the age my father was when it was torn to shreds. "Felix! Did you find 'em yet?" The other person who came through the bushes yelled, as soon as it noticed me it froze and stared at me. It then slowly turned its head - keeping its eyes on me - towards Felix and whispered, "is this them?" Felix nodded, smirking, "what was her answer?" The older person said to Felix, "she was about to answer, then you came up, yelling, and she didn't answer. I think you scared her."
I looked between these people and then said "I am not 'scared' of you. How can I be? I watched my father get torn to pieces and I didn't even flinch. Well... he did always say 'if someone dies in front of ya. Don't even bother feeling bad for them. It'll only slow ya down!" The two people looked at me, then at one another, then at me once again. "Are ye sure she's safe to take back t' town?" The older person asked Felix who just smirked and said: "trust me father, she is most definitely safe enough to take back."
Felix started to walk towards me, I backed away until I bumped into a tree. Felix then stopped right in front of me, he started to lean his head towards mine. Then he whispered in my ear "so Sparrow, wanna have a home to go to?" I nodded slowly.
"Come on then! Let's get going," Felix said. He then turned around and stopped dead in his tracks, I was confused, so I looked around it to see a person eating the old man. Felix looked horrified. I pulled out my knife and started towards the person when Felix stopped me. He then ran forward digging his blade into the person's head and twisting harshly to the right tearing a giant hole through the person's skull as their brain started oozing out of the gaping hole. It walked over to the now dead body that was once its father. I felt horrible. After I had just told them what my father used to say, the old man dies.
Felix gets to the body and crouches down. I noticed tears welling up, so I decided to stay silent.
"Father, I'm so sorry! I promise I will purge this world of these infected fuckers and I will never let you slip my mind for even a goddamned second! I promise... I promise," Felix said crying. I walked over to them and placed my hand softly on their shoulder, "I'm sorry Felix," I started "there was nothing we could have done. The world wanted it dead and so it was slain," Felix looked and me then yelled "it'? Is that what my father was to you? An 'it'?" I was confused, "I'm not trying to insult your father in any way! I swear, I just do not understand what I would call your father other than it. I have never heard any other term for it," Felix's features relaxed a little, "hell I'm sorry Sparrow, I didn't mean to raise my voice at you. It's not your fault your father was killed when you were young. You don't call people 'it'; you call them he or she. Depending on the gender, he is for boys or male, while she is for girl or female. Got that?" I smiled and nodded "but in what context would I say 'he' or 'she?'"
Felix chuckled as he got up "I'll explain on the way." "Felix, what are we gonna do about your father?" I asked looking at the corpse.
Felix looked at his father's corpse, "If we leave him here, he'll turn into a zombie, we'll have to destroy his brain and then if you feel like digging a hole for him then we will. But as I'm sure you know by now zombies are more active in the dark."
"I'll deal with him. You go for a walk or something. I will only be a few minutes," Felix looked unsure before turning around and walking off. I watched as he disappeared behind the trees. I sighed and started to pull some flowers out of the ground to put over him.
I was finally finished when I heard footsteps from behind me. I knew it was Felix so I shrugged it off. "So, Felix you don't need to worry about your father. He won't be any trouble. I also made him a pretty grave," I said as I stood up, "Felix?" I turned around and saw a person! I screamed and took a step backwards falling over Felix's father's corpse. The person stepped closer and was now leaning over me, drooling on me. It leaned in, its cheek had been bitten off and was dripping blood onto my shirt as well as the open wound in its stomach. I looked for my knife before realizing that it wasn't on me "dammit!" I said through clenched teeth, I have never felt so weak. I close my eyes and await my death.
Nothing happens? I open my eyes and see that the person has taken steps away from me? I was confused. Why did it not kill me? I heard footsteps, 'crap another one!' I thought. I am seriously dead now. I attempt to look around the person, but it moves with my eyes. Almost as if it wanted me to just look at it.
Suddenly the person grunts and shudders then falls forwards with a knife implanted in the back of its head. "Felix!" I yelled as I got up off the ground, I ran and hugged him I couldn't help but crying into his shoulder, even if I just met it... him? Today. "I thought you weren't afraid of anything," Felix chuckled, "it's different when it's about to kill you but then doesn't!" I sniffled.
"Here," Felix offered me a small square of clothing, "wipe your tears and blow your nose. We should get going soon," I looked at the square and then slowly wiped my face with it, after I had wiped my tears away Felix looked at me and giggled. "What? Is there something on my face?" I asked wiping my hand over my face, "you face is so dirty that I can see where your tears rolled down your face," Felix chuckled, I gasped and looked away, acting offended. I heard Felix stand up, "we should get going now. We need to get at least halfway before dark. Then we will get some rest and continue at first light." Felix looked like a strong dependable leader. I see why his father was so proud of him.
Felix grabbed my hand and we started walking off into the woods. Away from the pile of corpses coated in pretty flowers of all kinds. Into the land of unknown. I was excited but terrified. I held Felix's hand as we walked.
