It was a warm summers day in 1957 as a young Veronica Ruth went for a walk alone.

She had been rejected by many girls and boys that day.

They said she was either too girly for baseball or too boyish to play with Barbies.

The young girl walked for a while until she came across a sandlot. She walked up to the home base and found a baseball bat along with a baseball.

She figured she could practice hitting the ball then maybe go home.

Roni grabbed the bat and ball then threw the ball up in the air, hitting the ball a couple of times across the field.

It was only when she hit a home run over fence into a scrap yard that she stopped because she couldn't play anymore.

That's when she heard a bunch of murmured wows and gasps.

Roni turned around to see 8 boys standing at the other end of the Sandlot.

As they made their way over to her, Roni made sure to hide her face with her hat and kept her head down to keep them from seeing she was girl.

A boy with big square glasses asked her. "Hey dude, did you hit that homer?"

Roni nodded her head and dropped the bat before she started to walk away.

Before she could get far, the tallest one grabbed her shoulder and made her face them.

That's when they saw Roni was a girl and all gasped in shock.

"You're a girl?" The kid with glasses asked her.

A smaller tan kid nodded. "Yeah, yeah, you're a girl?"

Roni nodded.

"Wow. I've never seen a girl play baseball before." Said the tallest one, impressed by Roni's skills.

Roni bit her lip nervously and nodded again. "Yeah, well I'm a girl who plays baseball, first time for everything. Look if you're gonna tell me to leave, don't bother. I'll show myself out. And sorry about your ball. I'll get you a new one."

Roni started to walk off again, but before she could the tall boy grabbed her wrist to stop her. "Actually, what if you play with us?"

Lots of gasps and murmurs could be heard as the small group called him over.

Roni learned that his name was Benny and could hear their whole conversation.

They said she couldn't play baseball because she was a girl.

Roni was offended decided she wouldn't waste ger time playing with these boys anyway. She practically ran away, speed walking out of the Sandlot, but before she could completely leave, she was stopped yet again by Benny.

She was face to face with him as he looked down at her guiltily. "Hey, I'm so sorry about them. They're just a bunch of blockheads." He apologized.

Roni rolled her as Benny tried to get her in his team. "Hey, um, look. I want you to join our team."

Roni looked up at him skeptically. "You want me on your team?"

Benny nodded. "Yeah. You've got some awesome skills and we could use another player. What do you say?"

Roni looked at him and contemplated on what she should do. She ultimately decided to be on their team and just sighed as she accepted his offer. "Okay, but two things. One, if those boys get out of line again I'm leaving. And two, do you have a extra ball? I kinda hit the other one over the fence."

Benny nods and Roni does the same.

They walk back to the sandlot and were met with the sight of all the boys stood in a line as if they were expecting the two.
