You gasped.
The room was deathly silent save for the noises coming from Kenma's video game. His TV cast a bluish tint onto his indifferent visage, the only source of light in the pitch blackness. He hadn't even bothered to look at you before, during, or after he said the four words that had you crumbling to the ground. No, he was too immersed in beating this boss to care about the girl who had all but withered away by his bedroom doorway.
"About time I left?" You repeat the words Kenma spat out at you just a few seconds ago, not wanting to believe what you heard. But the two-toned haired male merely blocked out the sound of your voice. A small hiss left his mouth as he took significant damage from the in-game boss he was desperately attempting to beat. His fingers tapped several buttons on his controller, grip tightening with every move. You, however, remained frozen in your spot.
After another minute had passed, Kenma finally dropped his controller onto the floor and sighed, glancing in your direction. You'd hoped that his attitude would change when he wasn't so intent on beating his game, but your fears intensified the moment you looked into his eyes. The golden-set pair of irises, irises that used to sparkle when you were the subject of their sight, were now dull and lifeless. They were hooded eyes that met your heartbroken gaze with pure apathy. Kenma frowned.
"You're still here?" He said. "I thought I told you to go."
You swallowed, mind and heart swirling with confusion. A pang shot through your heart once, twice, three times. There was an oddity about the air, something about the thickness and the tension, that prevented you from turning on your heel and walking away.
"Why are you being so mean to me?" Your voice cut through the tension in the air like a knife.
"Mean, huh..." was Kenma's immediate response. For a second, you thought you saw a flash of pain in the blonde's eyes. "I don't think I'm being mean."
"Then why are you acting like this?"
"I'm being honest." Kenma stands up from his spot on the ground and walks over to you. Every foot step he takes towards your trembling figure feels foreign and threatening. "I just don't love you anymore."
He's only standing a few feet away from you, but the distance between your figures seems to span for miles. You don't see the way his hands clench and unclench trying to stop himself from lunging at you, nor do you see the tears building up in his eyes because he doesn't actually want you to go. No, the moment he said those words, all the blood had drained out of you.
Crack.
"Ok." You said, empty. You turned around, the first of your footsteps landing against the cold ground. Not once did you utter another word, not even as you closed the door and picked up on Kenma's soft gasps and sniffles. Not even as heart wrenching sobs wracked your body did you turn around. As you stumbled through the hallways of Kenma's home alone, each heavy step brings back memories of stolen kisses, intertwined hands, shared laughs. Forget it. Of warm hugs, loving whispers, awkward touches. Forget it. When the wispy night air hits you, you break. His words play like a broken record in your head.
"About time you left."
