The Two From Ice

Chapter 2: Her

You're walking through the facility, trying to find someone who wasn't in ice.

You: Hello?! I need help!

You make it to a security room.

You: Hello?

You don't see anyone inside as you walk in. You spot a pair of jeans and some work boots. You take them and put them on.

You see a red button that says "OPEN VAULT DOORS". You see a gas mask hanging on the wall. You take it off the wall and you put it on.

You press the button. You clear the dust off the window with your hand and you see the giant vault door start to open through the window.

You can see your reflection in the mirror. You notice that there's a hole in the mask. You gasp. You try closing the door, but it won't work.

You desperately look for another gas mask, but there's nothing. The vault doors open all the way.

You close your eyes and accept your fate...

You hear a bird chirping from outside. You open your eyes and you can see a blue sky without dusty fog outside. You take off the gas mask and you drop it on the floor.

You walk out of the security room and towards the vault door. You walk across a platform that leads to the door. You walk outside to feel a nice breeze.

The trees of the forest in front of you have tripled in numbers and size. Maybe even more. You take a deep breath and you can feel the clean air enter your nose.

You look to your left and to your right to see the other vault doors still closed. You jog over to the one on the left.

You see a red button and you press it. The giant vault door opens slowly. It's dark in this facility.

You hear a girl yell from inside.

Girl: Hello?!

You: Hello?!

Girl: Who's there?!

You: I'm from the next facility!

Girl: Where are you?!

You: The vault door!

You hear some animal make a loud call from behind you. You look behind you, but don't see anything.

Girl: Hello?

You look back to see the girl, you saw from the other line, make it up to you.

Girl: It's you. I saw you looking at me.

You: I--I was bored in the line. Anyways, when did you wake up?

Girl: I don't know. Five minutes ago?

You: So did I. My counter said I had ten-thousand years left in that container.

The girl's eyes widen.

Girl: Wait, so you're telling me...we woke up halfway through?!

You: I guess.

The girl walks past you and outside.

Girl: How're we even breathing right now?

You walk up next to her.

You: I think we should be asking WHY we're even breathing right now.

The girl looks at you.

Girl: What, like, we were chosen?

You: Probably.

Girl: But why?

You: ...I don't know.

You look forward and you sigh.

You: What I do know is that we're here...and so far, no one else is.

The girl looks down for a second. She looks back up at you.

Girl: There're other facilities.

You look at her.

You: You mean it's probably more than just us?

Girl: Did you check the third one?

You: No, I didn't.

Girl: Maybe we can check if anyone else made it out?

You nod.

You: Okay.

You both start walking over to the facility to the far right. You make it to the red button.

Girl: How do you open these?

You: The red button.

You push it and the vault door starts to slowly open. Once it's open, you smell something horrid. You and the girl recoil away as you both cover your noses with your shirts.

You: Christ!

The girl gags.

You both look back to see bones and blood everywhere.

You: Oh, my god... They're all dead.

Girl: How...? The door was closed.

You and the girl look at each other as you both take your shirts away from your noses.

You: I don't think we should stick around to find out.

Girl: ...So what do we do?

You sigh.

You: ...I don't know. We might be able to go back in, but...our fate may be the same as theirs if we do.

You and the girl look at each other.

Girl: My family's in there. My little sister.

You: And my mom's in there. Don't think I'm saying this because I don't give a fuck. I do... But this is something we cannot deal with. There're other people on this planet. People who're tasked to take care of the planet while we were gone. They may still be here.

The girl looks at the bones.

You: Look, if you don't wanna find someone, that's fine. But I'm leaving. I'm gonna fix this problem.

You turn around and you walk away. After a few seconds of walking, you hear the girl.

Girl: Wait!

You stop walking and you look back to see the girl jogging towards you. She makes it up to you and lets out a quick sigh.

Girl: I don't wanna be left alone.

You: ...So you're coming?

Girl: ...Yeah. She says, nodding her head.

You: Great.

You both start walking into a giant forest.

You: I didn't really wanna go out there all by myself.

Girl: I wouldn't either.

There's an awkward silence between the two of you.

You: ...I'm Y/N.

Girl: ...Clementine.
