Chapter Thirty-Seven

Kai felt three hands grab his arms before he could lunge forward and knock Moon away from his father. He didn't look back to find out who's hands were holding him, but he gritted his teeth together to keep from screaming curses at Moon that would do him no good whatsoever. His fists shook at his sides as he sat helplessly on his knees, staring holes into Moon's skull.

"NOW!" Moon yelled louder, shaking Falte harshly and nearly knocking his glasses off his face. "Where is it?" She searched their faces in a frustrated way, then her silver eyes darted across the room quickly.

As soon as she spotted it, she let Falte go and charged for it, diving down to the ground almost like an animal pouncing on its pray. She snatched it up in her hands and struggled back to her feet, a wild smile spreading across her perfect face.

Kai pulled his arm away from his friends' hands, scurrying forward on his hands and knees to his father, who was sitting on the floor in wide-eyed confusion and relief. Kai grabbed his shoulders, forcing Falte to look at him.

"Are you hurt?" Kai asked his father desperately, his voice shaking in fear. If Moon had hurt him, she would be dead in mere moments as soon as Kai got his hands on her. "Talk to me!" he prodded when Falte didn't reply.

"N-No," his father eventually stammered. "I'm fine. But that man out there... He's not." He turned his head toward the door, but Kai kept a firm grip on his shoulders. "Kai, he's hurt. We have to go see if we can help him."

Moon's cackling laughter drew their attention back to her. She was holding the key over her head, her eyes wild as she grinned over at them. "Thank you, my puppets," she cooed. "You've done most of the work for me, but now it's my turn." She turned toward the door, marching toward Shintaro.

"NO!" Kai cried, realizing what she was trying to do. He knew Shintaro was the other half to the key, but he hadn't let his mind accept that fact. Thorn had tried this trick but had been stopped.

Now Moon would be stopped.

Kai leaped to his feet, rushing toward Moon's back desperately. He wouldn't let Moon get to Shintaro. If Shintaro wasn't going to try to stop the Abyss from opening, Kai was. If he had to, he would do it all by himself.

When Kai reached Moon, he jumped higher than he though was possible and locked his legs around her shoulders, sending her reeling forward with a cry. She flung her arms out in front of her to catch herself, but the key didn't leave her hand as she and Kai crumpled to the ground.

As Kai reached for the key, he realized Chase was there, holding Moon's arms down with a band of Light Magic, knowing she couldn't break through the opposite of her magic. Then Linda was there, kneeling hurriedly in front of Moon and touching her head, probably to keep her under wraps so she wouldn't hurt the others. Followed by Linda was Abby, who plopped onto Moon's legs, pinning them to the grass. Gabriel was right behind Abby, standing behind Moon in case she teleported away.

Kai yanked the key from Moon's grip and braced himself for the voice of The Dark Lord to sneer at him, but nothing came. He breathed a small sigh but wasted no time. If Linda couldn't have destroyed it, could he? He had Dark Magic. Could magic destroy itself?

He looked up and found Shintaro helping Zeke sit up, both of them watching as the rest of them held Moon down. Zeke's hand was hovering over a ripped hole in his shirt that was soaked with blood, but there was only a small scar where the wound had been, which meant Shintaro had healed him.

Kai stood up, stepping over Moon and taking a deep breath as he held the gem in both hands. He channeled his magic to his hands, hoping, wishing with all his might that the Dark Magic would counter itself and destroy the whole thing.

"What are you doing?" Shintaro cried suddenly, his voice full of fear and confusion. When Kai looked up, startled, Shintaro was on his feet and walking toward Kai with a worried and exasperated look.

"Destroying it," Kai replied simply, backing away from Shintaro quickly. "Stay back, Shintaro. You can't be near it, or he'll break free." He held the key tightly, keeping his focus on the magic that was beginning to tingle in his fingertips.

"Kai, stop it," Shintaro said, his voice reaching such a desperate tone that Kai paused for a moment.

"No," Kai protested as his hands began to shake. "I'm not stopping, Shintaro. Why would I just give up? This is our world. We can't let him in." He turned his eyes back to the key, determined to ignore Shintaro's pleas.

"Kai, stop, right now," Shintaro said harshly, his voice shaking. "That's not going to work. Kai, drop the gemstone. Right now. Kai! Listen to me! I'm serious, Kai, enough! What you're doing is going to kill you!"

Shintaro lunged forward just as Kai's hands began to spark, but Kai spun away. "You're being ridiculous, Shintaro," Kai said softly. "We have to stop this from becoming our future. If you're not going to, I will."

"Kai, NO!" Shintaro screamed, but it wasn't the words that startled Kai. It was the tone of his voice. Shintaro sounded desperate, angry, and terrified. His voice shook as if he was going to break down. "Please, Kai," he said in a softer, shakier tone. "Please think about what you're trying to do. It's not going to work. It will kill you."

Kai looked up at Shintaro, who was walking closer. Kai backed into the wall of the house, grunting in exasperation. "Shintaro, stay back."

"Drop the gem," Shintaro said flatly. "Now."

The key suddenly made a loud cracking sound, and every nerve in Kai's arms went numb. He screamed at the sudden pain that left as instantly as it had come, his hands opening to drop the key.

But the key didn't fall to the ground.

Instead, it zipped right out Kai's hands and shot towards Shintaro.

Shintaro yelled and stumbled back.

The gemstone collided with Shintaro's chest and the world went dark.
