START OF BOOK I.

"So? What do you think?" My mother asked, our car still parked in front of the school entrance.
"Mum, everyone's looking at us." I sighed looking at the school, exasperated. "Did you really have to drop me off in the police car?" I turned around to face her.
"You love the police car!" She replied, pouting.
"Yes, but now everyone's going to think I'm some kind of juvenile criminal or something." I raised my arms in the air and my mother shrugged me off with a laugh.
"You're still not answering my question though." She pointed at the school and I turned around to inspect it once more.
The Raimon High School was nothing like my previous schools. Gigantic and imposing, the institute was composed of many buildings, including their very own sports centre, and many fields. The school was known for their wide range of athletic courses, and most importantly, their soccer team, whose victories had financed many expansions.
My parents had met each other and fallen in love in this place. Of course, it was way smaller back then, my mum always pointed out, but I had always wanted to attend this school, to feel what they had felt, and to live my best years. I had been looking forward to this moment for years. And now that it had finally come... It didn't feel right anymore."It looks alright mum." I weakly smiled, trying to seem genuine, in vain.
"I know you would have much rathered share this moment with-"
"Let's not talk about that right now, ok?" I immediately cut her off, knowing where this discussion was going. "It's supposed to be a happy moment." I smiled, genuinely this time.
My mother placed her hand on my cheek, smiling back. "Of course, I'm sorry. Just try your best to enjoy yourself, ok? And I won't drop you off in the police car anymore, I promise."
"I will, thanks mum. See you later." I chuckled and kissed her cheek as she pulled me in a tight embrace. After finally letting me go, I opened the car's door and walked towards my future.
Most students seemed to know each other as I walked to the administration's office. They were all hugging and jumping in excitement, telling stories about their summer and laughing as much as they could. Every friend group was slowly coming back together and reuniting, and there were screams of joy all over.
"Name?" The secretary asked when I finally reached the counter.
"Avril Karasu. It's my first day and I was told I had to pick up my time schedule here." I replied.
"Give me a moment." The lady started looking through a pile of schedules, while I patiently waited. "Ah, here it is. Avril Jones-Karasu, right?"
"Yes, but nobody uses Jones anymore." I explained, warmly smiling. The lady looked at me with an eye full of scrutiny before handing over my schedule.
"Well here you go. You have no classes today, teachers are still setting up and the sports centre is opening its doors for the new school year. But you should check out your locker, and tomorrow everything will flow normally."
I muttered a quick thank you and dismissed myself. I exited the main building and started walking towards the entrance, simultaneously pulling out my schedule to check out my classes. French, Italian, Israeli, Spanish, Chinese... "So many languages." I sighed, remembering telling my mum not to sign me up for these classes during the summer. "Oh well." I thought, reaching the gate.
As I was about to exit the school, I noticed all the students were walking towards the sports centre. "Weird." I thought.
I stood on my tiptoes, trying to figure out what was going on, but I was obviously too far away. I paused for a second. Should I have gone to see what was going on? It wouldn't hurt me, right? I looked at the gates, and then back at the sports centre. Nobody was waiting for me at home, and it was still pretty early. I had all the time in the world to check out what was happening and finding out where my locker was without being too late.
"Oh well." I shrugged as I followed the mass of students to the centre.
Turned out, everybody was walking towards the football field. I stopped for a moment as a shiver ran down my spine.
Of course, my mum had suggested I joined the team, but frankly, I had had enough of soccer for a life time. I had "retired" in some sorts, and had vowed to stay away from the cursed sport as long as possible.
As I walked towards the field, my eyes instinctively went to the score board. 13-0 for some "Dark Knights".
"What? That can't be right..." I muttered under my breath.
"I know right? It's so crazy!" A girl with short blue hair and piercing blue eyes replied. She was rested on the railing, her eyes full of sadness as she watched the match. The school's team had basically been torn apart by the other one. Many players were hurt, and most were on the ground, unable to play too.
"These kids come from the Fifth Sector, the organisation that runs the championship." She explained as I heard words that were all too familiar to my ears. "That guy, the captain, challenged our team. He said that if we lost, our team would be replaced with theirs." She told pointing at a player on the field.
The boy she was pointing to was very tall. He had a blue hair and amber-coloured eyes, who were smiling devilishly as he laughed upon a player that couldn't play anymore.
"He's Fifth Sector scum?" I asked to my new found friend.
"Yeah they're calling him an imperial." She turned around and smiled at me. "Are you new here too?"
"Oh yeah." I sheepishly answered.
"Well I'm Skye Blue. I was just watching the match because a friend of mine, Arion Sherwind was playing, but I guess I made a friend too!" She warmly smiled at me and I smiled back.
"Pleasure to meet you Skye, I'm Avril, Avril Karasu. Wish we could have met under better circumstances." I sighed as I looked out for her friend.
Arion Sherwind was one of the few players who kept playing. Although the opposing team kept knocking him down all the time, he never gave up and always stood back up.
"Half time is almost here." Skye pointed out looking at the score board. It was now at 15-0 for the Fifth Sector team. "Do you think there's something we could do? The team seems pretty down." She said as I looked down at the players on the field.
They didn't look very good, that's for sure. They had been massacred by the opposing team, and anybody could tell they were out of energy and will to play.
"Was there something I could do?" I thought as Skye waited for my answer. Playing would do no good. Even if I did manage to keep up with the Imperials, I was outnumbered and down 15 goals. There was no point in trying, and either way, I didn't want to play.
But if they lost, they would have been replaced by Fifth Sector scum. Did those kids even attend this school? A lightbulb suddenly turned on in my head, although I knew it was quite dangerous and I needed to be careful.
"I'll go get some medical kits at the administration office. These guys are going to need some serious bandages." I finally replied.
"Alright, I'll tell the team managers. Come back soon!" Skye said heading off towards the field.
I looked at the field one more time, and my eyes crossed those of the opposing team's captain. He looked at me up and down, and even as I turned around, I could feel him staring me down.
As I walked to the office to get the first aid kits, I took my phone out and dialled a familiar number. I paused one second, thinking my decision through. It was the smartest thing to do, but if I got caught, I could be in some serious trouble. I sighed and pressed call.
I wasn't very good at following rules anyways.
