Leonardo's golden eyes fixed upon the blubbery blob of flesh bouncing across the icy floor.
The ringed seal merrily skidded to a halt as she approached her keeper, who then showered her with applause and words of adoration.
The woman made cooing noises as the seal squished and stretched, squished and stretched, squished and stretched its neck, just like that. Leonardo was amazed at how the creature managed to squeeze that dog-like face until it nearly disappeared into a thick ball of rubbery skin.
The almost millennium-old vampire continued to watch as the seal cheekily collected her reward —a fresh mackerel— before rolling back into the water.
Damn. Imagine rolling around all day doing nothing and getting showered by affection and treats instead of getting yelled at.
"Is something the matter?" Comte's voice interrupted his train of thoughts.
"Niente. Let's get going."
"What is this?" Leonardo asked as he ran his hand over the large box. It sat on the dinner table, wrapped in a paper the color of the ocean.
"Something from the aquarium," His companion smiled mysteriously. "I ordered it specifically for you."
"This better not be a penguin you're sneaking out of there."
"Nothing of the sort," Comte chuckled. "Open it."
Leonardo opened the lid to find himself greeted by a pair of black eyes sitting atop a bulging nostril.
"Oh." He took out the entire thing and propped it on his lap. "It's the girl from yesterday."
It was a large plush of the ringed seal from yesterday, perfectly rotund and squishy (though not as rubbery) like the real thing.
"So," Comte set his crossed fingers on his lap. "What do you think?"
Leonardo stared at the miniature's somber expression.
"It's ugly."
From the corner of his eyes, Comte peered at Leonardo, who was currently planting his face on the 'ugly' plush.
He couldn't help but smile as the man nuzzled into its velvet belly.
"I thought you hated it."
Leonardo turned his face in Comte's direction, twisting it into a playful scowl. "I didn't say I hated it. I just thought it was ugly."
"Hmm, that may be true. But you should've seen your own expression as you, ah, observed the fine lass back at the aquarium."
"Her name is Yuki-chan. And please don't talk about animals like that ever again." Leonardo protectively circled his arms around the plump thing.
"How did you know her name?"
"It's mentioned on the tag." Leonardo pointed towards the card he pinned on the fridge. "Also, I read the message the store clerk wrote under your request. To my Reo-chan? It sounded like you were sending it to a girlfriend. Imagine if they knew you're giving this to grown-ass man."
Comte just laughed at Leonardo's mock sour tone.
"The more I look at you, the sadder your face looks," Leonardo whispered to Yuki-chan. "You're starting to look even sadder than me."
He was lying on his back on the couch, the seal plush sitting on his belly. The man seemed to grow fonder of his gift recently, unconsciously carrying the thing everywhere he went around their apartment.
"Do you remind him of me that much?" He asked the seal, although the man in question was well within earshot.
Comte padded over to put two mugs of steaming coffee on the low table. "In a sense, both of you are equal in how cute you are."
Leonardo distracted himself from his spreading blush by repeatedly pressing Yuki-chan's nose.
"Hey, if you boop the nose like this, the bridge disappears." He muttered. "It looks like a pair of—"
"Leonardo," Comte warned.
