Chapter 13

The week goes by rather uneventful until Friday morning. Megan was so excited to see if she made the team that she arrived at school a half hour early. She kept asking Coach Bobby if she made it when they were alone but he wouldn't tell her.
Of course when she looked for the list on the gym door it was no where to be found. To pass the time she decided to text Susie and see if she was there yet. She was and they decided to meet in the quad.
"Hey Susie. "
"Hey Megan. Your here early, what's up?"
"I wanted to see if I made the team. Today he is going to post the list."
"Oh yeah that's right, I forgot."
"How could you forget, it's the only thing I been talking about all week."
"Well, I'm sure you made it, you were pretty good. Hey we'll go celebrate today after school when you make it!"
"What if I don't make it?"
"You will! "
They walk to first period an Megan anxiously waits for it to be over.

Before gym Megan rushes up to the list to see if she made it. She scans the list twice and doesn't see her name. She turns to Susie with a look of disbelief on her face.
"What's wrong Megan?"
"It's not there. My name isn't there. I didn't make the team."
"What, let me check."
Susie walks to the list and checks the list from top to bottom.
"Here it is."
"Where?"
"Right here, you are the equipment manager and 1st alternate. Sorry Megan." Susie says while patting Megan in the back.
"It's alright, let's get ready before we are late."
They go get ready and on their way into the gym Coach Bobby sees Megan and tries to get her to make eye contact. She avoids looking at him so he walks up and ask to speak to her in the hall.
"What's wrong Megan?"
"You know what's wrong! Why didn't you tell me I didn't make the team!"
"Lower your voice." he tries to pull her close but she refuses.
"You are the 1st alternate, so if anyone gets hurt you will be on the team. I had my reasons babe, I want to spend as much time together as we can. Why do you think I made you equipment manager." He says as he caresses her check.
She smiles and blushes a little.
He bends down and kisses her on the nose just as the gym door opens.
They both look in the direction of the door and is surprised to see Susie standing with her mouth hanging open.
Susie closes the door and walks as fast as she can to the other side of the room.
"Oh god, what are we going to do? " Megan looks frantically at Coach Bobby.
"Calm down babe, just go over there and make something up. She'll believe you, she's your best friend."
"But I don't know what to say, I can't lie to her, I just can't."
"Look at me babe." he waits until Megan looks at him.
"We have to make her believe it was innocent, what she saw was nothing but me making you feel better for not making the team. We have to because if she tells somebody we won't be able to be together. Do you want that?"
"No. I . I don't. I'll go talk to her."
"Good girl. Text me later and let me know what happens."
"Ok"

Megan goes into the gym and looks for Susie. She jogs over to where she is standing but before she can say anything Coach comes in and starts class. He decides to let them have a free day.
Good Megan thinks now she has time to talk to Susie about what she saw or maybe didn't see.
"Hey Susie wanna play catch?"
Megan, what was that, y'all looked way to close out there. When I opened the door it looked like he was whispering in your ear."
Oh thank goodness, she didn't see him kiss her. She just saw him pulling away from her face.
"Yea he was, he was trying to make me feel better about not making the team. He was whispering the perks of being equipment manager. "
"But why would he whisper it?" Susie says, confusion written on her face.
" I don't know I guess that was his way of trying to make it sound better then it is. " Megan says trying her best to not look like she is lying.
"You should get your mom to come up and find out why you didn't make the team, you were way better then those other girls."
" Thanks Susie, but I'll be ok, it is what it is you know. " Megan says sadly.
Susie hugs Megan and they walk laps around the gym talking about what they had planned for the weekend.

Coach Bobby P.O.V.

As he stands in the corner of the gym watching the students play he can't help but watch Megan and Susie talk.
"She better not make trouble for me, Megan is mine and I won't let her stand in my way!" Coach Bobby angrily thinks.

Megan texts Coach Bobby

Hey, what took so long? - Bobby
Nothing, just didn't want Susie to see me text you - Megan
Oh ok, what happened? - Bobby
Everything's fine. she didn't see anything - Megan
We got lucky, we gotta be more careful
