Dear Professor Lupin,

I am truly sorry for not having contacted you before now and I am even more so for what I'm about to ask of you. I know that this is not fair on you but I can't think of anyone else who I trust more than you with something as important as this. You are perfectly within your right to refuse but I just ask that you hear me out for a few minutes.

A friend of mine is in danger. His family is heavily associated with the Death Eaters and he has been blackmailed, coerced and forced into siding with them too. The dark lord has assigned him a task that he could never bring himself to do and he has reached out for help, telling me about everything he has been through and what they are doing.

I understand that this may complicate things drastically and that you probably have no interest in helping someone who bears the dark mark and, honestly, I can't blame you. I first thought the same but I ask that you not judge him for who has been forced to become but for who he really is.

This is where it gets difficult. My friend has disclosed that, with him having told me private information and confessed to not being loyal to the dark lord, he cannot return to the Death Eaters. The dark lord is extremely skilled in legilimency and if he goes back, he will surely be killed, or worse.

Him and I have formulated a plan that will allow him to escape safely and for myself to leave for a period of time too. Everything that happened with Cedric and the graveyard has haunted me every minute since it happened and I am in the hope that this arrangement will allow me to heal, at least a little.

We have agreed that, for our safety and yours, we shan't be informing you on the full extent of our plans, though we feel that you at least deserve some form of explanation, part of which you have already read.

What we need from you does put you in danger and I hate to put you in that situation but I am unsure of where else to turn. We are well aware of the fact that, being underage, we still have The Trace on us. My friend, however, found a loophole in the law. The Trace only works with magic produced by a wand. Given that we are both still young and therefore not fully dependent on our wands, it shouldn't be too difficult to train ourselves in simple wandless magic.

We started reading theory a few weeks ago and have been practicing day and night for the last 4 days. So far, we have been able to produce a few extremely simple charms and spells, though transfiguration is still a dead end. We have a small window of time before our plan is set in motion that we are using to improve our skills for when we can no longer use our wands safely.

Professor Lupin, I consider you one of the smartest men I know so I am pretty confident that you already have an idea of what we may be asking from you, though if not, I shall explain. What we need is someone inconspicuous and hidden who is willing to hold on to our wands and disable any attempts at a tracking charm that may be used by either Professor Dumbledore or the Death Eaters.

I understand that this is a momentous ask from us and that doing so is utterly selfish of me but you know I wouldn't do this to you if I had any other choice that wouldn't endanger your safety.

It goes without saying that, should you agree and take our wands, you are not to tell a single soul anything that you have read in this letter. In fact, when you have made up your mind, would it be too much trouble just to ask you to throw it in the fireplace and away from any prying eyes?

As I previously said, you are under no obligation to help us and I want your decision to be purely yours, not influenced by a false notion of guilt or anything else. I am begging you, consider this thoroughly and only accept should you feel that your situation is stable enough.

I am, again, sorry for not owling you this year and I am sure you're glad to know that I am mostly safe, just as I will be when I receive your reply.

I hope you are okay, Professor Lupin, and I will await your letter to find out.

Sincerely,

Harry Potter.

P.S. I had my friend do a grammar and spelling check on this letter (after explaining to him that a spell-check was not anything to do with magic) and that is why this letter is so eloquent and professional. I am sorry to disappoint you if you thought I had suddenly become a sophisticated writer - unfortunately, it's just that my friend is smart and I didn't want to seem too stupid when writing something as important as this.

P.P.S. This is Harry's friend, and I just wanted to inform you that, without my input, you would have been sent a 3 paragraph mess with no commas and about 6 missing full stops. You should be glad that one of us knows how to spell "sincerely".

Also, I was taught by you in Hogwarts two years ago and I agree with Harry's judgement of you - You truly are one of the smartest men that we have had the pleasure of meeting and I am extremely grateful for the lessons you taught me, in spells and in life. I learnt to value courage from very few people in my life and I am glad to say that you are one of them. I don't think I can thank you as profusely enough as I desperately want to for helping me see through my father's shelter of lies and inspiring me to be my own person - one who is brave and stands up to those he has been oppressed by. I can't express how much I admire you for those lessons you taught me and, in truth, I owe you my life. Thank you.

Hello! This is my first proper book in a while and it feels so good to be writing again! As I said before, I would appreciate any input, tips and ideas that you may have and always love hearing from my readers. I have a general idea of where this story is going but I am perfectly happy to incorporate anything you may see fit, within reason of course.

I hope you've enjoyed this chapter, however short, and continue to enjoy the rest of the book.

~ Ginsy.
