All anyone had been talking about today was the Yule Ball. Who they were going with, what they were wearing, it was kind of annoying. Cedric had been kind of touchy about the subject, avoiding my eyes whenever I spoke about it. The first couple tasks had definitely taken a toll on him. I could see the exhaustion in his eyes.

I walked with him to Potions class and he was eerily quiet. He turned to me right outside the classroom, his hands shaking. "What's wrong?" I asked him, worried of the response.

He reaches into the pocket of his robe and pulls out a singular yellow rose. I gasped, pretty certain of what was coming next. "I'm sorry," he rambled, "It got a little messed up on the way here." He handed it to me and continued, "Y/n, you are the kindest, funniest, most beautiful girl I have ever met. Would you like to go to the Yule Ball with me?"

"Yes," I replied with a smile. He sighed in relief and gave me a giant hug as his friends cheered. Even though I felt a little weird about it, maybe I could start to see him this way. I mean everyone else did. And he really was perfect. Charming, nice, respectful.

I heard a small noise, almost like a whimper coming from behind me. I turned around to see the source of the sound and saw a glimpse of Malfoy, his silver eyes full of disappointment.

I had never seen him like this before. He quickly averted his eyes from mine and turned around to make a brisk exit. As he rushed down the corridor, I could see him clutching tightly behind his back, a singular white rose.

I could hear her voice before I could see her

I could hear her voice before I could see her. "Wait, Malfoy!" I dropped the rose and quickly kicked it to the side before she could notice. "What do you want, y/l/n?" "To know what the hell is going on. What's this?" she asked picking up the rose.

"If you must know, I was going to ask Pansy to the Yule Ball, but I realized that she is way below my standards." It was a bullshit excuse, but hopefully she'll buy it.
