Chapter 6

It was an early start to the morning but necessary. Alec had been avoiding this issue since he and Magnus found the information about the eventuality of his and Jace's rune vanishing. So he got up early to train with Jace, and then grab some breakfast. There, he’d tell him the news.

Penny's Diner… 10 AM

“Uhh Alec, bro, you really pushed me to my limits today. Is it vampire strength?” Jace exasperated, as they sat in a booth.

“Possibly. “ Alec chuckled.

“So how have you been adjusting?” Jace asks, as the Waitress pours them coffee.

“Umm, as well I can possibly be. The bloodlust, it's hard sometimes. As long as I feed I’m ok. I also get regular lust, but, uhh, Magnus helps with that. “ Alec's face flushed, and Jace couldn't help but chuckle.

“Nice dude. So what did you want to talk about?”

Alec sighed. He couldn't do it. The words just weren't coming out. So he did what he had to. He brought the file  along, knowing full well he couldn't bring himself to speak. He set the file on the table, tears wilting in his eyes.

“Bro… “ Jace took Alec's hand. “What is it?” he asked.

“Just read it… I thought I could tell you but… I just can't…my mouth can't open, my throat is closed… it's just too painful ” Alec muttered, as one tear escaped his left eyes grasp, streaming down his cheek. Jace opened the file and read. He read for 20 minutes, then closed the file. His face somber.

“Alec…. A diner wasn't the best place to break this news. WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME THE MOMENT YOU GOT THE INFORMATION. “

Jace was mad, and Alec was barely holding it together. He didn't want to lose it in a public place. Going out to breakfast wasn't a good idea. He grabbed the file and ran out. Jace sighed, paid for the coffee, and followed suit.

“ALEC! DON'T WALK AWAY FROM ME!” Jace demands, only causing Alec to walk faster. They reach the apartment and go inside. Magnus appeared to have stepped out. Good, this was between him and Jace.

“Alec, you haven't answered my question. Why?! This is something I needed to know right away. “

“I’m—I'm sorry Jace. I guess I was just afraid. Afraid you'd hate me, for what I’ve become, and that I've ruined all we strived for to become Parabatai. A bondage that's just going to fade… and it's all my fault. “
Alec was losing it now, balling his eyes out. At some point Jace lost it too, crying with him. They cried so hard, they passed out. The fatigue of training and not eating since yesterday also contributed to that.

12 hours later….

Jace's vision was blurry. He didn't know how long they were out. Judging by the sun setting, it had been awhile. Magnus was busy in the kitchen, cooking dinner. His eyes were red, so that meant Magnus must've found them, and had been crying too.

“Magnus, Where’s Alec..? Jace asked groggily.

“He's—He's out on the balcony…” Magnus muttered, stirring the pasta sauce. Jace gave him a reassuring pat on the shoulder.
Jace knew Magnus could make dinner pop out of nowhere, but he was probably cooking the mundane way to calm himself. Jace eventually found Alec on the balcony, leaning on the rail, looking down on the streets of New York.

“Hey…” Jace muttered.

“Hey…” Alec mimicked back.

“So when was the last time we slept together like that?” Jace said, trying to lighten the mood.

“Heh, we were 7. It was after watching the mundane movie Chuckie, when Mom made us watch it to show us that horror movies were fake compared to what we would be facing. “

“Yeah, Mother of the year,  but, She's better now. I think being a Shadowhunter was too stressful on her, especially after leaving the circle, so she burrowed her emotions so that she could do her job. At first I admired it. Showing no emotion keeps you alive. Until I met Clary. She showed me that emotion actually makes you stronger, not weaker. Look, I know you're more embarrassed and ashamed right now then sad. The sadness has swept away, I can feel it through our rune. The question is, why? We've cried in front of eachother before. “
Alec walked over and pulled the collar of Jace's neck back. There was a pair of fang marks in Jace’s neck. Jace eyes widen at the sight. Suddenly, sadness waved through again.

“I was so upset, emotions running high, my instincts took over, and I bit you. I’m so sorry Jace. “ Alec choked, on the verge of tears again.

“That'll explain why I passed out first. Why I feel so sleepy. “ Jace said casualty, tucking his collar back. “It's ok Alec, it's not your fault. “ he added.

“You should hate me. You should kill me. I’m a monster. “ Alec said in between sobs.

“Alec….” Jace pulled him into a hug. “It's ok. I'm here, and I’ll be here as long as you need me. It's not your fault.  It's that bastard who turned you. You're still you. That's all that matters. “
“But I’m not me! If I was, everything would be normal. Our Parabatai rune wouldn't be fading, I  wouldn't feel like eating everyone all the time. I should be steaked. “ Alec is pulled stronger into the hug, and he felt Jace becoming sad too. And warm tears on his shoulder.

“ Don't you dare even mentioning that again. We'll get through this together. “ Jace sobbed.

“Right…” Alec muttered, burying his face into Jace's  shoulder.

They pulled away then sat down on the patio chairs.

“Now, I didn't read the whole file before you ran out with it at the diner. Is there a way to keep the Parabatai bond?” Jace asked.

“Yeah, but I’d have to turn you. “ Alec grabbed the file from his bag and continued.
“Haneda and Edwina both lost their husbands to demon attacks, this was when the uprising began. Spouseless, Edwina made the choice to be turned so that her and Haneda would remain Parabatai. She sent her children away to  the Shadowhunter academy where they would be safe, as did Haneda. Once she was turned, their Parabatai bond became stronger beyond what anyone had seen. They could feel emotions clearer, feel every injury, if one of them had depression or anxiety, so would the other. Finally, they could hear each other’s thoughts. “

“Shiit….” Was all that Jace could mutter.

“Here's where it gets tricky. “ Alec said, turning a page. “When you were killed by Valentine, a part of me died. However, if we were to be vampire Parabatai, if one dies, so does the other. So if someone steaked me for example –“

“I would die too.” Jace finished, Alec nodded. “That's messed up dude.” Jace grimaced.

“I know, that's why I’m not turning you. I’m not taking away your humanity due to selfish reasons of wanting to keep you with me. I won't do that to Clary.”

Jace smiled his signature crooked smile.  “Thanks man. I would hate to outlive Clary. However, I will have one exception. It's true the Angels have given her powers and memories back. Still, I have this dreaded feeling that it's only to help with the uprising. Once we stop the uprising, they might take her powers and memories away again. If that's the case, then turn me. “

Alec was shocked, as Jace continued.

“I’m serious Alec, if Clary is taken  away from me again, then turn me. I’d rather live forever with you, then grow old without her. “

It was quiet, but then Alec hugged Jace. “Deal. “ Jace hugged him back, and then they went back inside.

“How's dinner coming Magnus?” Alec asked, rubbing his shoulders.

“Just about done. Why don't you both sit down?” Magnus suggested, as he snapped his fingers, the table was set.
This was one of those moments Alec wished he could read Magnus' mind. He couldn't read any Downworlders mind. Though he supposed he didn't need any mind reading powers to sense Magnus was upset. Especially how quiet it was all through dinner and dessert.

“Well I better get going, Clary’s waiting for me. I’ll see you at training on Tuesday. “ Jace said, going out the door.

“Yeah, bye Jace. “

Jace nodded, then he closed the door behind himself.  Alec locked the door then turned to his husband.

“Magnus…you ok? I know you're upset from finding us like that. “ Alec asked, walking towards Magnus, pulling him into his arms.

Magnus sighed, and spoke softly against Alec's chest. “Sorry, it was just hard to see you like that. Both of you. “

“I understand. It's ok now. We've understood the outcome, and know what's going to happen. We agreed I’d only turn him if the Angel’s take Clary's powers  and memories back again. “ Alec replied, ruffling his fingers through Magnus' hair.

“That makes sense. “ Magnus agreed.

“Yeah, so let's go to bed, get some sleep? We can enjoy our last day of vacation tomorrow, ok?” Alec said, rubbing Magnus' back.

Magnus nodded silently, and then the two went to bed. Both exhausted, they passed out instantly. Tomorrow was their last day before returning home, to tell the Clave what happened. The sooner they got a grip on this uprising, the less people would die.
