::::::::::::::::::::::::

Silence.

It was deadly silent.

I could literally hear my own heart beating in my ribcage, sending blood rushing through veins. The moment I stepped into the cafeteria, all eyes were on me. I swear some of the students were holding their breaths. The two ends of my lips tugged upwards in a smirk. Life can be so sweet at times. It was so entertaining to watch their expressions. Most widened their eyes in fear and looked away as if staring into my eyes would turn them into stone. Others clenched their teeth and flared their noses in hatred and disgust.

Whispers slowly spread through the crowds. The cafeteria lady gave me an apologetic smile when she handed me my usual ham sandwich and fruit salad. She, like most other teachers, felt sorry for me and pitied me. Little did they know that I was not the lonely socially awkward girl they believed me to be, but instead someone who savoured and enjoyed the taste of other human's fear on the tip of my tongue.

I'm a Sophomore in my high school yet I had more power and control over whatever that went on in school then anyone else. Even the principals. To them I was and outcast, the girl who was always left out. But to the students in this pathetic excuse of a school, I was someone to be terrified of. Anyone that came in my way would regret it. I could make life a living hell.

In a sense, I am an oddball. I stand out even in a huge crowd. With fiery red hair that goes all the way down to my waist, its hard not to notice me. And even at a first glance, you could see that I had twinkling grey eyes with streaks of gold slightly too large for my face. Sadly, light freckles covered nearly every inch of my face though my mother used to tell me that they were cute. Parents, anything about their darling kids were cute to them. I rolled my eyes.

Because of my appearance and personality, some call me the Red-haired Devil.

No, I surely wasn't your average teenage girl.

Moreover, I definitely wasn't human.

King Zale sure was cruel. Punishing me for that 'crime' that I committed by sending me to this place and looking like a mere mortal when that human totally deserved it. There was a good side to it though, I get to use my powers and have some fun. I knew that King Zale surely will be red with rage when he finds out about my situation now. I got hold of every single dirty little secret of those that dared to stand in my way and revenge sure was sweet. You'd be amazed to know how many dark secrets everyone kept buried deep in their hearts.

Yes indeed, I can read minds.

Pretty common ability among my kind but it sure does come in handy when you are a mermaid banished into the human world to learn "human emotions". Most of the time though, I simply shut out all the thoughts, I mean thousands of irritating and meaningless blabbers inside your head? Not the nicest thing to experience.

Gobbling down the last bit of bread, I let out a sigh of satisfaction. This ham thing that humans have is just so savory, ben and jerry ice cream too. I'll probably never get tired of it. As I stood up, the screeching sound made by the chair shot pain threw my ears. Sensitive hearing isn't exactly something pleasant in the noisy world of humans.

Even as I walked down the corridor and up the stairs, the mumbling and whispers still trailed behind me. People scurried away to avoid me. The consequence of ticking me off lay fresh in their minds.

Something was off today though. I could sense it. I wasn't the centre of the chatter today as I strode past but hey, who cares? It actually feels great to not hear people talking behind your back every single second for a change.

One thing that I found out about humans on my first day of school was that they simply love to gossip. They could ramble on and on about anything trivial.

From some conversations near by, I picked up something about a guy whom I've never heard of before but I really couldn't care less at the moment.

Looking around aimlessly, I didn't notice a tall lanky figure approaching right in front of me.

BANG!

I stumbled backwards slightly. Looking up, I peered into a pair of familiar yet unknown eyes which belonged to the person that rudely knocked into me. They were a beautiful shade of blue, like one of a sparkling river flowing with life. His eyes seemed to look straight into my soul as though he knew things about me that even I wasn't aware of.

Gosh, I'm over thinking again. Like a human could ever do that. I chuckled lightly at my own thoughts.

Checking him out, I noticed that he was actually rather good looking in a way. His dark chocolate brown hair had just the right amount of messiness and he had the most distinct jaw line I had ever seen. His six pack was visible through his casual white t-shirt which now clung to his skin with sweat. Don't get me wrong, I don't like him in anyway but I had to admit he was quite a sight.

Seeing me staring at him from head to toe for a few seconds, a smirk played on his lips. My heart nearly skipped a beat.

Stupid humans and their good looks. I would never fall for one that's for sure but appearances sometimes really do make things harder...

But one thing that I learnt since young was to never show your emotions. I kept myself composed and gave him a cold stare.

"Hey. I'm Jayce. Anything that I can help you with cutie?"

I scowled at him. So this was the new guy that everyone had been talking about. I can see why all the females would swoon over him but I won't fall for his looks. Like any human would ever be worth it. I hated them with passion. They make my blood boil.

Everyone had stop their activities to look at us. Well this is going to be news. Their gazes were burning holes at the back of my head. I knew rumours will definitely start spreading like wild fire in minutes. Nosey humans.

Spinning on my heals, I went into the classroom with my head held high.

"Better watch it pretty face or you'll regret it."

Even as I walked down the hallway, my heels clicking loudly, I still couldn't get rid of the uneasy feeling I had at the back of my head when I looked into Jayce's mysterious yet serene eyes. There was something about them that was luring me towards him, something that I just couldn't put my finger on.
