Yawning and stretching,Melissa reclined on the bed smiling and full of gratitude.One,for being alive and seeing another beautiful morning full of afya and two,for spending the night in a beautiful mansion.That night was actually one of the very few peaceful and comfortable ones she had had in her entire course of life.
After a few minutes of reminiscing about the last few hours of the previous night,she came to a halt where Rachael had kissed her on the lips.
"Why would she kiss me on the lips whereas she is a lady like me? Probably because she is nice and that's how they do it here and it means nothing.It would have been bad had it been a man"
Melissa brushed off her thoughts and sprang out of bed.Dragged her feet lazily to the sink and cleaned her face before she walked out of the room and down the stairs to the kitchen.
She looked around to see if there was any spot she could set firewood and start a fire to make breakfast but the floor was sparkling clean.Looked for a charcoal jiko but there wasn't any.Looked for a stove but there wasn't any either,so she just leaned on the electric gas cooker and stared blankly into space,with no source of fire to make breakfast.
"Goodmorning beautiful" Rachael greeted leaning on the threshold of the kitchen door,smiling broadly.
"Good morning to you.Am sorry I have not made breakfast but it's because I couldn't find any source of fire" Melissa explained apologetically
"You are leaning on one,but don't worry,it's not your job" Rachael said smiling at Melissa who turned immediately to look at the simfer five-burner gas cooker.She had no idea what it was.
She stepped aside and watched as Rachael pressed on a button on the wall and the gas cooker miraculously produced fire,and before she inhaled for a second time breakfast was ready.
They sat by the kitchen island having breakfast and chit-chatting before Rachael suggested that they watch a movie and they moved to the living area and sat on a couch.
Rachael selected The L word generation Q,brought a bowl of popcorns, sat next to and wrapped her arm around Melissa's neck.She occasionally brushed her arms against melissa's boobs who didn't seem to notice or just ignored it.
After watching several episodes,Rachael became heated up by the romance-based scenes and in as much as she tried,she couldn't control her emotions anymore so she ended up kissing mellisa,deeply this time but the latter did not respond.Instead she opened her eyes widely like a trapped rat and stared at Rachael after she pulled back,probably trying to trace back words that had seemed to be running away from her.
"Why did you do that! Why did you copy these western people while you know very well that its wrong" she finally managed to ask,half-yelled after regaining her composure
"I did what i've wanted to do since the first time i set my eyes on you" Rachael said calmly " I like you Lisa" she added and looked at the ground
"What!" Melissa exclaimed " You are my fellow lady,you are not a man!" She added and stood up from the couch
"It doesn't always have to be about men Lisa" Rachael responded and walked up to her,held her hands and looked straight into her eyes " Love has nothing to do with gender or sex.You fall in love with someone's heart and not their genitals dear" she added
"But you know its illegal,a taboo,its against our culture and against God" Melissa maddened by Rachael's words managed to act cool.She had never thought,imagined nor experienced this,she knew it happened in the western culture thou but not in Africa,especially not in her community.
"Fuck cultures and their preposterous hetero- normal standards about who we should love or date" Rachael annoyedly answered "And fuck God too" she added,her face falling
"What! How do you even say that!" Melissa was now becoming so very infuriated by Rachael's rate of ignorance "Don't you believe in God?"
"God is just a human construct" Rachael said
" And what is that supposed to mean?!" Melissa asked raising a brow
"It's supposed to mean that God is just man-made up.Nobody's ever seen God! How do you even believe in something you've never seen?" Rachael said and walked to the wall,next to her tiny wooden sculpture
"So what do you believe in? Where did human beings come from then because i take it you don't believe that you were created by God" melissa asked exasperatedly
" Heard of paleoanthropology?" Rachael asked melissa who just shook her head No " Then do your homework well.Thats where i believe i came from" she added
" I like you so much Lisa" Rachael broke the awkward silence that had started creeping in " I dont care what everyone else's ludicrous ideas about this are.I can make your life better,i can give you everything lisa,just give me a chance,let me prove it" Rachael,who now seemed weakened,her eyes glossy said sliding down the wall.
Melissa on the other hand stood facing the window,staring blankly at the beautiful garden at the back of the house and seemed to have been lost in deep thoughts,before she finally spoke up
"I cannot go to bed with a fellow woman! That is satanic! And if thats why you brought me here,thinking that i'd give in,then am sorry to disappoint you.I cannot trade my dignity with money.Am leaving"
she said,ran up the stairs to the room she had been assigned,wore her tatters and carried the rest in her green paper bag and ran back down,walked right passed Rachael to the door.
The door was not locked so she just walked out without hesitation and banged it behind her.
She sadly dragged her feet to the gate,multitudinous thoughts clouding her mind.
She tried pulling and pushing the gate open but she could not open it and it was after several failed trials that it ocurred to her that she did not have the combination codes to open the gate.
She hopelessly turned around to see Rachael watching her from the window before she disappeared.She sat down by the gate,waiting for the gate to miraculously opened,as everything around here seemed to miraculously work itself out.
She sat for half an hour before she decided to swallow her pride and ask Rachael to open the gate.
She walked back to the door,which automatically opened barely to her touch and exposing Rachael who stood behind it.
"I was hoping you'd change your mind" Rachael said,a smile threatening to touch the corners of her lips
"Open the gate for me" melissa shallowly said
"Lisa,you don't have anywhere to go.You can stay here with me and you can take all the time in the world to think about what i told you.The world out there is not a safe place for a girl like you" Rachael sympathetically tried to convince Melissa who seemed to have made up her mind.
"Open the gate for me please" she said ignoring everything that Rachael had said
Rachael decided to adhere to melissa's wish,led her to the gate,inserted the codes and the gate slid open.
Melissa walked out of the gate,disappointed and with a broken heart as a tear dropped down her chubby cheeks.
"You are always welcomed here Lisa and i'll be waiting for you incase you change your mind" Rachael called from behind her but she dared not to turn.
Rachael stood by the gate,watched melissa until she was out of sight before she finally closed the gate and walked back to the house hoping that Melissa would come back.
