Chapter 19:
JUWARIYA
The next morning, I got to my office and settled down. I remembered that I had to decline Kevin's invitation. I knocked on his office door.
"Come in." He answered.
"Good morning." I greeted.
"Morning, Are you done with the article you were working on?" He asked as he working on his laptop.
"Yep."
"And don't forget about the event."
"Er..."
"Is there anything wrong, Ms Hassan?" He looked at me, raising his eyebrow.
"No, nothing at all! What time and where?" I asked.
"As I said, I'll send you a driver to pick you up by 6:00 pm, and I'll meet you there. My personal designer will deliver a dress by 5:00 pm." He pauses. "About the article, please submit it to Ms Jordan at the editorial office."
"Yes, Mr Hart," I said as I walked out of his office. I was disappointed in myself; I couldn't refuse him. I guess I have to escort him to the party, then. My stomach growled as I was working on some files. I realized it was lunchtime. I stepped out of the building and headed to this nearby halal cafe and had lunch. After I was done eating, I went back to Hart Inc.
It was 4:00 pm and I was done working on the file. I entered Kevin's office, he wasn't there, so I dropped the files on the table and called it a day. A few minutes after I got home, the dress Kevin's designer sent had arrived. It was a beautiful black maxi dress along with some expensive accessories with beautiful black high heels and a beautiful black chiffon hijab. The dress was modest enough. I was impressed, he knew how important my religion is. I mean I had chosen my religion over him before.
After dressing modest enough, I applied a little makeup just to look presentable and added accessories. Minutes later, Kevin's driver arrived.
I walked out of my apartment
I saw Kevin standing outside his car. He looked at me and blinked a few times before his eyes went wide. I guess he still had a little crush on me."You look beautiful." He said as he opened the door.
"Thank you," I blushed. We arrived at the event. The place was beautifully decorated, everyone was dressed up in designer clothing. The theme of the event was black and white.
As we walked in ladies couldn't stop looking at Kevin; it brought back memories of college. He shook everyone hands and greeted them I return while I just stood beside him.
I was nervous and anxious; I was the only one with a hijab which made me feel uncomfortable. I didn't fit in. Kevin noticed my behaviour and asked if I was ok.
"Yeah, I just need some air," I replied and walked out of the building. I found a bench to sit beside the pool. I shouldn't be here. This is way out of my league. I hoped he didn't bring me here to embarrass me, to prove to me that I was below his level.
I just wanted to go home and lay on my bed.
"Hey, are you okay?" Kevin asked as he sat beside me.
"I'm fine," I replied immediately.
"Alright. The event is about to start." He said, still gazing at me.
I nodded. To my surprise, he held my hand in his and started walking back to the event. I felt tingles, such a weird explosion of feelings in a matter of seconds.
AstaghfirAllah! I immediately removed my hand from his and acted as if I was fixing my hijab in case he'd feel bad otherwise. We walked into the massive hall that had tables beautifully decorated. We took our seats and waited for the event to start.
As the event started, Kevin was at the bar section, talking to a bunch of people. I just sat there waiting for the party to be over. I caught him a few times staring at me.
It was Kevin's time to speak at the event.
