Chapter Inspired by the Song "Battlefield" by Jordin Sparks – all lyrics belong to her.

"Don't try to explain your mind

I know what's happening here

One minute it's love and suddenly it's like a battlefield.

One word turns into a war

Why is it the smallest things that tear us down?

My world's nothing when you're gone

I'm out here without a shield

Can't go back now."

FURY POV

New York had gone to crap. My team, the Avengers, were down there right now saving our asses as I was stood on the centre podium of the helli-carrier taking the annoying dribble of the council members that didn't understand nothing about our situation. Ever since Loki had escaped us, Shield had been working on solutions to avoid a mass slaughter. On the one hand we had avoided that situation; the slaughter wasn't mass as the avengers along with the guidance of my shield agents had tried to limit the number of casualties. The police and national guard were also present on the streets now and were working to evacuate as many citizens as possible. On the other hand, the city of Manhattan was pretty much falling to pieces. That huge animal had taken out much of the infrastructure of the scrapers and they were now tumbling to pieces. Smoke could bee seen rising over the horizon as the city burned. The avengers were our only hope in taking back New York. It was their purpose, 'to fight the battles that we never could.' I thought back to the day when my dearest colleague and friend, Phil Coulson, had died. I had told Steve, Tony and Drala, that earth needed a group of heroes to help defend us and save the day. As we saw this day, a hero is what they all were becoming.

"Director Fury." The council members caught my attention as they projected themselves through the computer screens. Their faces darkened as they spoke of the current situation. I already knew what they were planning, they had planned it right from when Loki had come to earth. Always prepare for the worst scenario. Now that it was here, I was reluctant to put it in action. I had faith in my team. "The Council has made a decision." One of the women confirmed. "I recognise the council has made a decision. But given that it's a stupid-ass decision, I have elected to ignore it." I retorted. My hand was on my hip as my long black coat fell behind me. Intimidation, that was my key quality. I was firm in my own faith that we didn't need to take rash actions yet and I didn't care what the council had decided, this was my mission to complete and I would not be ordered around like some lackey. "Director." One of the other men spoke softly but gravely as if I was a bomb about to go off. "You're closer than any of our subs. You scramble that jet...". What were they thinking? Actually, they probably weren't thinking. "That is the island of Manhattan. Councilman." I clarified harshly "Until I'm certain my team can't hold it; I will not order a nuclear strike against a civilian population.". These Assholes had no faith in anyone but themselves. They sat in their offices far from the actual fight and claimed they could make the most reliable decisions. "If we don't hold them here, we lose everything." They protested. "If I send that bird out, we already have." I summed up gravely before shutting them off. 'Assholes' I thought before walking off to where agent Hill stood at the nearest screen.

DRALA POV

I had to get up to Stark Tower, the fight was getting worse as the Chitauri saw that we had begun our plan of attack. They were scared. Scared that we could actually win this thing. As predicted, more and more Chitauri came from the portal to attack us. Two of us were now on the ground fighting to protect the remaining civilians. Steve had gone to aid citizens who were being held captive in the bank a few streets back from where I was while I fought my way through the busiest street of creatures. Stark tower was positioned at the end of the street but seemed so far away when between you and your goal was many warriors. Tasha had been smart, Crazy but smart, by abducting a Chitauri craft to get up to the portal controls at the top of the Tower. I knew she would need aid as that thing in the sky wasn't closing by itself. But I also needed to convince Loki. Needed to convince him to end this fight, close the portal and get rid of what ever was in his head. That needed to happen somewhere where there were no distractions, nothing to stop him from breaking free from whatever control was penetrating his mind. Stark tower was the best place to go. The Chitauri was mainly on the streets or in the air so that was a no go. Hopefully I would be able to get him to come and face me.
