More Than Friends

I went back to my room after my shower. I put on my blouse and dress pants I had picked out for the first day. I wanted to be sure I made a good first impression on my professor. Riley wasn't there when I got back so I assumed that she had already left.

I gathered my things and made my way over to the fine arts hall. It was even bigger than I imagined. The rooms were twice as big as that stages I had back at my old high school. This was my happy place. I went into the auditorium and saw a big group of people.

"Is this character building?"I asked.

"Yes it is young lady." Said a nice looking older man with a big smile.

"I'm Amelia Conner"

"Nice to meet you, I'm professor Carter"

"Class meet our new student Amelia"

Hellos and other greetings scattered the room. One girl in particular caught my eye. She wasn't very tall and had curly red hair. To be honest back home it was rare to see anyone with unnatural hair color. She was walking over to me.

"Hi I'm Candy, you're the new student right?"

"Yeah I'm Amelia."

"I love your name it sounds so suburban, I'm Candy." she said laughing.

Her name is Candy. Wow. Thats different. I really like it.

"Uh thanks" I said. "Your's is so uh, sweet sounding."

"So what brings you to New York, other than school?"

"I don't really know, I needed a change of scenery I guess"

"Thats cool, I'm from Brooklyn so I'm lucky that I grew up so close."

"Lets get started class" Said Mr. Carter.

"We should talk again soon" said Candy.

"Definitely."

Mr. Carter talked about what we should expect from this class. I was so excited I loved being in this new place. It didn't even seem new to me though It was like I was supposed to be here all along.

After class I walked around the fine arts all. It coincidentally contained the film section of campus. I'm walking by the movie rooms and see Caleb messing with a very expensive looking camera. He looks so hot when he's serious. Did I just say that? I need to get a grip.

"Amelia is that you?" he asks. Concern on his face.

Startled by him for the second time today I walk up to say hi. Just then Riley emerges from the other corner of the room. Her makeup and hair look really messed up. Oh my god.

"Oh wow sorry I didn't mean to interrupt anything, I-I I'm sorry I'll go"

As I'm walking out Caleb yells something but I don't respond. What did I just witness. Was what Caleb said about them not dating true? I said I wasn't gonna let anybody get in the way of my life and yet here I am upset because a guy I just met was hooking up with my roommate.

I ran into the girls bathroom because I didn't want anyone to see the stupid tears rolling down my face. I look at myself in the mirror and see a girl who I promised myself I would never be again.

As I'm washing my face I see someone from the corner of my eye.

"Hey are you okay?" the voice says.

I turn around and see Candy. Of course. The girl I just met and actually wanted to be friends just saw my crying. Today has been great.

"Oh um yea I'm fine I'm just." My voice breaks.

"Hey it'll be okay." Candy says.

She grabs some tissues for my and wipes my face. She's being so nice. I've never met anyone who's is so willing to be kind to someone they just met.

"Will you tell me whats wrong?" Candy asks.

We sit down on the bathroom floor together. I tell her about Caleb and how I thought that he liked me and about how I promised myself I wouldn't let these things make me upset anymore.

"I understand how you feel." Candy comforts.

"One time I had a big crush on this girl in my history class back in high school. She kept on telling me that she really liked me and that she had never had a friend like my before. I thought that she meant that she liked me as more than a friend. Two weeks later I saw her kissing some boy at a party she invited me too. I asked her who she he was afterwards and she said that he was her boyfriend. We stopped talking after that. I was too heartbroken to speak to her anymore." Candy expressed

Did she say she liked girls? I had never meant someone like that. My town was very conservative. Another reason why I left.

"What?" Candy said confused why I hadn't said anything.

"Oh nothing I've just never met a girl who likes girls"

"You couldn't tell?" She said pointing out her red hair and baggy jeans.

"I guess not" I said.

"Anyways you shouldn't worry about any guys right now. You should just go back to your dorm and watch a movie or something" Candy said.

"I'll see you around" She got up and helped me up too.

"I'll see you around" I said.

I gathered my things and left the bathroom and headed back to my dorm.

Luckily when I got back Riley wasn't there. I wanted to make sure I was asleep when she got back so I wouldn't have to talk to her.

I fell asleep thinking about my interaction with Candy. Why did I feel like when she was helping me she was being more than friendly? Was she flirting with me? Why did I not mind?
