Kyle's POV
I woke up to realize we stopped on a gas station. First I got scared because I thought Craig just left me here like this, but then I realized that he probably wouldn't leave walking, since I was still in the car. I got out and stretched my arms and legs, I had a good sleep. This day's gonna be fun.
I heard a sudden voice from behind me that made me jump a little, turns out it was just Craig. "Oh, so you woke up." I nodded. "Yes and I'm ready to start the day." He looked worried, but I didn't think about it too much, it hard to read his feelings from his facial expressions so maybe I'm just seeing it wrong.
"Okay, I want breakfast." I said as I made my way to the gas station's shop. "Well...uh...yes, I actually wanted to tell you that..." I turned back hearing this response. "I...I didn't bring money." I literally screamed in my head. It's not very thoughtful to mess with me when I'm hungry, or when I'm experiencing any kind of negative emotion. It becomes harder to control myself in those situations. "And, we need gasoline too..." Craig admitted. Great, my big let's-run-away-trip only lasted until the closest gas station, this is beyond humiliating. I can't go back, I planned this out so well. I have to find out how we're gonna get food and gas.
"Agh, so if you didn't bring money then what do you have?" I sighed after a long minute of thinking. "My camera." Of course he had his camera, he carried it everywhere. "Cool, maybe we could sell that." Just as I said this sentence out loud, something very unexpected happened, Craig looked...angry. Did that camera mean so much to him? "N-no...never." He held the camera even more tightly in his hands. I felt so selfish for asking him such thing. He did so many just so that I could be here because I wanted it to and now I'm asking him to sell the thing he loves the most? What the hell is wrong with you, Kyle?! I have to find another way to continue our trip, but first I have to apologize to Craig.
I saw him sad, hurt for the first time ever. He never showed any emotion, he didn't feel anything ever, but still, it's only the first day of our trip and he's almost crying in my arms. "Hey, Craig...I'm sorry." I whispered to him, but he kept looking away. Fuck, I'm not good with apologies. "Look, I know how much it means to you...it means everything to you, right?" He still didn't look at me but he really slowly nodded. "You feel like there's no worth living anymore because nothing makes you feel anything. But you want to feel so badly, you want to be human who has feelings, who feels pain, happiness and love. So that's why you are so happy that you have this camera, when you look at it, you relive because it reminds you that no matter how weird you are, you're still human." I said these last sentences without even knowing that I said them out loud, they just came on their own. I looked up at Craig and...this was the second surprise that day...he was crying.
"How do you know exactly how I feel?" He asked wiping away a few tears, this time he was looking at me. "Because you're just like me...we're both weirdos." I smiled, I think at that moment some kind of bond that was always between us grew stronger.
"Okay, now if you're done, we could start actually thinking about how we're gonna get gas and food." I say as we made our way behind the gas station. It wasn't anything special, just a few dirty bathrooms and some cars parking there. "Nothing in here." Craig kicked one of the trash can. "Yeah, let's go inside." I said and kicked the trash can even harder.
Some chill radio music was playing in the store, not a lot of people were in there. The cashier looked at us like we just killed a kindergarten, and I don't blame her at all. I mean, what would you think if short boy wearing nothing but a shirt and some boxers and a pale guy with no social skills would visit your store?
I made the situation even more awkward by walking up to the counter. "Hello, could you please show me a map?" I asked, knowing where you are can always help in situations like this. She quickly handed me a map, but didn't stop staring at me and Craig with that terrified look for a second. "Uh-uh..." I realized that we weren't even that far away from South Park and we're already in trouble. Then I noticed something, a train station very close to where we are right now. Let's just forget the car and the food, maybe we could somehow get on a train without buying tickets. "Thank you for your help and have a nice day." I handed the map back to the cashier, she looked very confused, but she was too scared to say anything. "Come on." I grabbed Craig by his shoulder and we left the store.
