BLOOD WAS STILL spilling out of the wounds on Belle's stomach. The cuts stung badly like someone had just poured straight rubbing alcohol on them. And not to mention, she was five hundred feet above ground trying to fly in metal wings that she had no idea how to control. Both her panic and the amount of pain she was in was making the world spin.
"Spread your arms!" Annabeth yelled. "Keep them extended."
Belle did as she was told. She spread her arms and the wings stiffened. They caught in the wind and allowed Belle to soar downwards at a controlled angle. However, as soon as she spread her arms out, sharp pain flowed throughout her entire body. She yelled out in agony and squeezed her eyes shut.
"We have to get her to land," Percy announced while flying next to her. "There's some ambrosia and nectar in my backpack."
"He's right, and these wings won't last forever," Annabeth added.
"How long?" Rachel cried.
"I don't want to find out!"
None of them did any crazy tricks with the wings because of Belle's wounds. They soared across the valley, over a road, and finally landed on the terrace of the visitor center.
Belle collapsed to the ground on her knees. She felt someone remove the wings from her back and move her gently to lean up against a wall. Belle looked up, her eyes foggy from pain, to see Percy staring at her worryingly. He pulled out a square of ambrosia from his backpack along with a canteen of nectar.
He handed her the ambrosia. "Eat this."
She took a bite of the square. It tasted like vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup — a treat that Belle would often share with Katie, Connor, and Travis. As she ate it, the stinging slowly faded away and the bleeding stopped. It just left four open gashes on her stomach.
"We should pour some nectar on the wound," Annabeth stated. "Just for extra measures."
Percy opened the canteen and hesitated over her stomach. He looked up at her, and his sea-green eyes met her blue ones. Percy offered her his free hand and she took it.
