The Base: The heart of human civilization on Sanctuaria, The Base is an underground metropolis carved into the bedrock beneath what was once the world before the vampire apocalypse. It is a sprawling labyrinth of tunnels, caverns, and steel-reinforced bunkers, illuminated by artificial lights that mimic the day-night cycle. The Base is a marvel of engineering and technology, designed to support millions of survivors with its own ecosystem, water purification systems, and agricultural zones.
Above ground, the Base is a refugee camp area which the last of the human race in that area went to on the outskirts of Glasgow.
During the Vampire Takeover, it had served for what seems to have been a long time as a waiting area and "sanctuary" of sorts for humanity. The Subsiders (vampire bat like creatures) who hunted and apparently ate humans, were not allowed inside the Base.
The Base had high rise barbed wire fencing and had a corn field and was a small estate of houses and flats and folks were all crammed into one room. There was even people sleeping in army barracks and tents.
Every so often, the men of the Base all travelled in army vans to a Supermarket for provisions.
The woman of the Base were taught how to sew and how to cook, while the men were taught how to hunt and kill and cook their own food.
The Base was also heavily guarded by soldiers with guns.
When the Base was attacked, and the remaining humans were captured, the Base itself was condemned and abandoned, but it was used as place of banishment/prison for ASBO/bad vampires. However it was made into a home for Emma and Salem and their family.
