"Ellis Tracey," the young boy smiled. His charming demeanor was more than enough to swoop hundreds of high school girls off of their feet. He had all of the girls at his finger tips just waiting for the day he would acknowledge them back. "What a surprise seeing you here." His smile revealed an array of shining white teeth, and a dimple on his left cheek. The sound of his voice would have sent most girls at her school into a frenzy, but to her he was just another boy.
"Hi," she said simply. She wasn't flattered by his superb physical appearance, so she simply brushed him off and went back to the disgusting drink her friend had poured for her.
"And you're drinking alcohol?" He chuckled and stepped a little close to her making her grow slightly uncomfortable.
"I guess I'm full of surprises," she shrugged her shoulders and tossed the red plastic cup into the waste bin. They stood there quietly while the loud music shook the foundation of the house.
"Would you like to dance?" The boy asked. She turned her head swiftly and looked at him. "You said you're full of surprises - so surprise me and dance with me."
"I'm not that surprising," a sly smile folded on her glossy pink lips. She left the boy in awe considering he had never been denied what he wanted, and navigated her way through the drunken crowd. "I'm going home," she shouted over the music to her close friend Arden.
"Are you sure?" Arden yelled back. Ellis nodded and gave a simple wave goodbye and walked outside where her ears were ringing from the loud music that she had been exposed to indoors. Her pleated dress flowed softly in the wind while she walked down the sidewalk looking for her car. There were cars lined up alongside the road and they were all teenagers that were at that party. She walked across the road and unlocked the door and looked around to see if anyone behind her. It was a force of habit - she had seen too many movies and had a fear of being kidnapped while trying to get into her car at night. The moon and stars were shining beautifully in the black sky, and for a small second she was completely captivated.
"Hey," her mother greeted as Ellis walked into the kitchen. Her mother was sitting at the table with a daisy decorated ceramic cup. Every night her mother would sit at the table and drink a glass of chamomile tea. "You're home early."
"It's nearly eleven," Ellis smiled causing her mother to laugh lightly. "I'm going to head to bed, I have to be at the shelter early tomorrow morning. Goodnight."
"Alright, goodnight," her mother called out while Ellis climbed the carpeted staircase to her bedroom. She immediately took off her dress and changed into something more comfortable. She scrounged up a loose fitted sweatshirt, and her favorite pair of black sweatpants. She danced along to the melody in her head that she had heard at the party while brushing her teeth. When she slipped in her bed, Ellis thought of the boy who had approached her at the party. He was such a charmer, and could have any girl at their large high school. She had an innocent reputation, and he could easily tarnish everything. She closed her eyes and fell asleep within solid minutes due to her comfortable state, and the wind flowing through her window. While she slept peacefully in her bed, the boy was making his way home and sorting through ideas of how he could convince her to give him the attention and chance he craved.

"Good morning," Ellis smiled as she greeted the volunteers. On Saturday mornings she was notorious for volunteering at the local animal shelter. The tradition started out with her volunteering simply to complete her community service time for the honor societies she was involved in. After growing attached to the animals, the kind young girl stopped in every Saturday for a couple hours to lend an extra hand.
"Good morning, Ellis," Meredith smiled immediately. Ellis had a friendly relationship with everyone, and they all adored her loving and caring personality. "We have a new addition - a pup from the north side of town.
"Is it in the back?" Ellis asked with a grin on her face. Meredith nodded and opened the door so Ellis could see the new canine. Ellis passed the multiple pins, slipping a few pats here and there until she was standing in front of the pin with the new pup inside. It looked up at her with sadness in it's eyes, and she immediately opened the cage to pick it up. It stepped back and put it's head down.
"This little guy was abused by the previous owner," Meredith explained to her. Ellis frowned and finally got the frightened pup to walk over to her. A smiling Ellis picked it up and softly rubbed it's rough coat. The dog looked up at her, and she surveyed it. She was immediately in love with him - the brown spot around the right eye, and the brown left ear made it even more adorable. "His name is Denver."
"Denver," Ellis smiled to herself. "I'm going to work with this one today," she referred to the trembling dog she held in her hands. Meredith smiled and walked off. Ellis took it to the showering room to clean and calm Denver, and to her surprise he loved water. She lathered the dog in the dog shampoo and rinsed it off, and let out small giggles when it would shake its small body and lick running water that fell from the shower head. After a few hours of working with Denver, he warmed up to her, and it nearly broke her heart to have to put him back. She filled all of the food and watering bowls for the other animals, and gave them loving pats on the head, and scratches behing their ears.
"Are you all done for the day?" Meredith smiled as Ellis walked back into the main lobby.
"Yeah," Ellis said picking up her cross-body bag. The door opened and she turned her head and her golden brown eyes enlarged when she saw who it was.
"Ellis Tracey...hi," the same boy from the party smiled at the site of her.
"Sammy...hi," she shifted on her feet uncomfortably. The boy had a woman standing to his side, Ellis assumed it was his mother and gave Meredith a look. "Are you guys looking to adopt today?" Ellis asked finally.
"Yes," the woman with Sam smiled at her. "Would it be okay if we take a look around first?"
"Of course, I'll take this one, Ellis. See you next Saturday," Meredith said to the young girl who was just dying to get out of Sam's view. She nodded and exchanged an awkward moment of eye contact with the boy who was wearing a smirk. The pair walked past her, and while Meredith was telling his mother about some of the animals, Sam opened his mouth.
"Do you volunteer here regularly?" He asked.
"Every Saturday," Ellis replied simply. He nodded and she bit her lip. "I should get going."
"See you around?"
"Sure," she nodded and turned on her heels and quickly walked out of the building thanking God he didn't mention her shooting him down at the party.
