She sat at the table in the lunch room completely zoning out her surroundings. She was rehearsing her report, and making sure there were no faults before she had to present it. She almost didn't notice Sammy sitting down beside her. She smiled up at him, and in his hands he carried two take out boxes and two bottles of water. "Hey, you," he smiled.
"Hey, what's this?" She asked pointing to the boxes.
"I brought you lunch," he grinned. "I skipped last period and went down to my favorite restaurant downtown. They don't have too many vegetarian options so I figured you can't go wrong with a salad," he laughed nervously causing her to smile even wider. "Is that your report?" He asked taking a bite of his burger. She nodded and he looked over her shoulder to get a quick overview.
"I'll let you look at it when your fingers are...less greasy," she said trying not to giggle. He nodded and she took a bite of the salad he had brought her and then followed with a small sip of water. "I'm so excited to see the turn out at the blood drive tonight. This is one of the biggest events we host all year." Sammy smiled and they continued to talk about the blood drive, their date later that night, and the basketball game that was being held on a Saturday rather than the usual Friday. After Sammy had finished his burger and wiped his hands clean he began to look over her report and was incredibly impressed. "Well?" She asked with a bubbling pit of nervousness in her stomach.
"This is amazing," he said with wide eyes. He met her irises and they were both caught up in the moment until she finally broke the magical moment by laughing nervously. "Oh, I forgot to show you this picture of J-Bean last night. She's the best dog ever I swear," he said pulling out his phone. He scrolled through his photo album and on his screen was a picture of the white Siberian Husky with a beautiful charcoal ring around its right eye. Jelly was sleeping on Sam's chest, and Ellis couldn't help but feel envious wishing that she could have been the one sleeping there. She quickly subsided the feeling realizing how ridiculous it was. She smiled and went back to her food as she desperately tried to erase any inappropriate thoughts she had about her classmate. "So, are you psyched for the pep rally?"
"Pep what?" Ellis asked looking up completely confused.
"The pep rally," he laughed. "You know, we hold one before every major event - homecoming, winter break, the blood drive," he chuckled. Ellis began to panic realizing that she had completely forgotten about the annual pep rally. How could she forget? She helped set it up.
"Oh no," she said with her mouth agape. "How did I forget about that?" She shook her head and ran her hand through her hair. "Well I guess I am psyched now," she said said causing him to laugh aloud. The pair felt eyes on them from fellow students wondering what they were doing together. They were an unlikely match, and to see them sitting at the same table enjoying each others company was a rare sight, and they all wanted to watch intently like it was some sort of free show.
"Oh, hey I have to go. I have to go finish up a test for my anatomy class. I'll text you though, and I'll see you in English," he kissed her cheek causing a stir of butterflies in the pit of her stomach. Something about it seemed so wrong, but at the same time so right. She nodded and waved goodbye to him and soon he was gone and out of her sight. She pulled out a book that she had just started and had began to read the second page when she felt someone sit next to her.
"Hey, what was all of that about?" Her best friend Arden asked smirking.
"What was all of what about?" Ellis asked closing her book. Arden playfully rolled her light colored eyes and tucked a piece of her brown hair behind her ear. "Oh, Sammy?" Ellis asked finally catching on.
"Yes, Sammy," Arden smiled. "Are you two like...you know...together? And if so why haven't you told me?" Arden asked getting way too hyped up about a minor situation.
