Edith

Hmmmmm... Hmmm... Da da da...Classical music played quietly in the background as I heard the clinking of pots and pans in the kitchen. The hazy air of steam floated around in our cozy cottage. I was watching my favorite show! I jumped up and down on the couch, cheering on my favorite character. From the kitchen that was connected to our living room, my nose could smell Mom cooking a delicious meal. I sniffed, filling my nose with smells of beef stew and broccoli.

"Ewww... broccoli Mommy? Really?" I called out from my spot on the couch.

"Yes, Edith, broccoli. You must eat it before you get any dessert tonight. Broccoli is very healthy for you!" Mom explained as she put the stew into two bowls. I groaned. "Come to the dinner table, honey!"

"I really don't want to eat this..." I mumbled as I walked over.  She placed a bowl filled with beef stew and the disgusting green broccoli in front of me.

"Please sweetie, just try it! Broccoli is actually very delicious." My mother protested. I grimaced. There was no way Mommy would make me eat this tree of doom! I crossed my arms, refusing to even look at the green thingy. My mom huffed. Then she started to tickle me!

"Ahah! That...tickles!" I giggled and screamed with laughter. "Please...stop! Stop it!" I managed to say between my gasps for air.

"Not until you eat your broccoli!" My mom grinned at me.

"Alright! I'll do it, I'll do it!" She stopped tickling me, laughing. She handed me the green tree. I eyed it with disgust. I cautiously took a bite of the thing.

HURK-

I nearly threw up. My mom sighed. She hesitated for a moment.

"Close your eyes, Edi.." She instructed me. I raised an eyebrow into a super high arch, a trick I picked up from Daddy. But, I did as she told me. I even covered my face with my hands.

"Not looking at all! Not even a peep, Mommy!" She scoffed a little. It was silent for a few moments. Suddenly, there seemed to be a strange energy in the air. I hear a static ring through my ears. Things felt as though they are wavering around me for just a second, until mommy tells me to open my eyes. Well, that was odd... but the broccoli looks just the same. I rolled my eyes.

"You didn't do anything, Mommy. It doesn't look any different." I complained.

"Why don't you try the broccoli, Edi?" Mom asked now. I begrudgingly picked up the broccoli and took the tiniest bite, not wanting to get tickled again. To my surprise, it was actually delicious!

"This.....this is really really good!" I told her, shocked. A spring of sweet, tart cake flavors had somehow entered my mouth. The savory sweetness of the stem is something I will never forget. I don't know how my mom made it taste so good, but I ate the whole plate of broccoli within seconds.

"Oh wow Mom... I don't know how you made this so good. I was wrong about that first broccoli!" I said with a mouthful of it.

"I knew you would love it, Edi!" My mother smiled warmly. Abruptly, out of the corner of my eye, however, I could see my mother's hand, a green aura surrounding... pixels for a split second. Then it faded. I was tempted to do my eyebrow thing again, but I just continued eating. Other than that, I ate the rest of my dinner with a smile on my face because all of the food was soooo good!

"Do you want any dessert tonight, Edi?" my mother asked.

"No thanks Mom... the dinner was already enough!" My mother smiled. We spent the rest of the night playing games like Twister and Connect Four, until Daddy came home from work. He looked really tired, like he had stayed up all night. To cheer him up, I told him all about the broccoli miracle. I also told him how I ate all my dinner that night! My dad smiled at me, telling me I did a great job eating all my food. But he glanced at Mom and gave her a look of worry. For the rest of the night, we watched The Rocket Racers and my favorite movie Pele and Buddy, until my parents nearly fell asleep. In the middle of making popcorn though, I saw Dad take Mom aside. Why'd he do that? Curious, I followed them silently up to Dad's room.
